Connecticut Defenders News Release
AKRON, OH- After catching wind that two of their most important offensive weapons had been promoted to the big league club, the Defenders topped the Aeros, 3-2 on Wednesday.
Garrett Broshuis took the hill for Connecticut in search of his 13th win of the season as he opposed right-hander Kevin Dixon who was trying to escape mediocrity and his defining 8-8 mark.
Akron gave Dixon an early advantage when Wes Hodges singled home Brandon Pinckney in the first to make the score 1-0, Aeros.
Nathan Panther smashed a solo homer in the last of the second to double Akron's advantage to 2-0.
Connecticut got both runs back in the top of the fourth on one mighty cut by Adam Witter. Antoan Richardson slapped a single up the middle and Witter crushed his seventeenth bomb of the season to knot things up at 2-2.
The long ball was on display yet again after three scoreless frames were recorded. Dave Maroul led off the top of the eighth with a bang as he sent a towering shot over the left field wall to pull the Defs into a 3-2 lead.
Ronnie Ray took over for Broshuis in the seventh inning and he made short work of the Aeros in the latter innings. Ray faced seven batters in two frames; the ninth, however, was a spectacle. Ryan Goleski started off the ninth with a laced shot down the right field line. Goleski chugged around first, headed for second and took a big turn towards third. Meanwhile, Mike Mooney bobbled and regained control of the baseball in deep right field, threw to Olmo Rosario in shallow right and the relay throw cut down the greedy Goleski at third. The remainder of the inning was quiet as Pinckney popped up to short to end the game and secure a 3-2 win.
Ray picked up his sixth win, Dixon lost his ninth and the Defenders won their fifth straigtht.
The Defenders and Aeros will do battle on Thursday night to close the three game series. Action will begin with the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-Game Show at 6:50pm before the first pitch at 7:05pm on ctdefenders.com or locally on the Defenders' Radio Network.
