Slammed Down...The Aeros led the SeaWolves 5-2 heading into the eighth inning last night, but Erie jumped on LHP Tony Sipp, making his first appearance of the season for the Aeros. The first three men in the inning reached on a pair of hits and a walk, and Casper Wells followed with a grand slam to left-center to give Erie a 6-5 lead. The Wolves added another in the ninth to make the final margin 7-5. The Aeros used RBI hits from CF Nathan Panther and SS Brandon Chaves to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth, and Akron took the lead with three runs in the fifth. 1B Matt Whitney ripped an RBI single to center, and another run scored when the hit skipped past Wells to make it 4-2. RF Stephen Head followed with a sacrifice fly to the wall in right for the 5-2 advantage. Whitney and Chaves had three hits apiece on the night to lead the offense.
Edell Excels...Tonight's starter for Akron LHP Ryan Edell has put together four consecutive solid outings. He's allowed just one earned run in each start, while tossing six innings three times and seven innings once. Over the 25 innings, Edell has 20 strikeouts and just one walk, while going 2-0 with an impressive 1.44 ERA. During the stretch, the Boston, MA native has dropped his ERA nearly a full run from 5.28 to 4.30. In his previous three outings, Edell was 0-1 with a 10.97 ERA. In his last start against Erie, the 6-foot-1 southpaw allowed just a run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in six innings. On the year, Cleveland's 2005 8th-round selection is 5-5 with a 4.30 ERA in a team-high 18 starts for the Aeros.
Carmona at Canal...Indians RHP Fausto Carmona will return to Canal Park Saturday night to take on the SeaWolves. A 19-game winner who finished fourth in the American League Cy Young voting last season, the native of Santo Domingo, DR is rehabbing a left hip strain that landed him on the 15-day disabled list May 24th. Saturday will mark his second rehab start after tossing four innings and allowing just a double for Class A Lake County Monday. Carmona was 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 10 starts with Cleveland before the injury. He made one appearance with Akron in 2003 before spending the second half of 2004 and first half of 2005 with the Aeros, compiling a 10-13 record with a 4.51 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 30 starts.
Missing Matt...LF Matt LaPorta will likely return to the team Saturday. The newly-named U.S. Olympian left the Aeros last Saturday to participate in the Futures Game at Yankee Stadium, and then returned home to Florida because of a death in his family. He is expected to be with Akron through next Sunday (July 27th) before joining the Olympic team.
Roster Move...Outfielder and leadoff man extraordinaire Trevor Crowe was activated from the disabled list today after missing two weeks with a strained left intercostal muscle. He is hitting .325 with four homers and 26 RBI for the Aeros.
