Murphy Wins Marathon With Walk-Off Blast

Daniel Murphy homered in the bottom of the 14th, giving the Binghamton Mets a 5-4, extra-inning win over the Connecticut Defenders at NYSEG Stadium Friday. The victory snaps Binghamton's losing streak at three. Binghamton (52-47) went ahead in the first when Fernando Martinez led off with a triple against Brooks McNiven, scoring on Jose Coronado's subsequent groundout. Connecticut (50-49) knotted the score against Jonathon Niese in the third, thanks to Ben Copeland's RBI single. The B-Mets reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third. Coronado started the rally with a two-out double. Murphy followed with a double of his own, bringing in Coronado, before scoring on Ambiorix Concepcion's base hit to left, putting Binghamton ahead 3-1. Back-to-back RBI singles by Copeland and Pablo Sandoval in the fifth knotted the score 3-3 before Binghamton rallied to re-take the lead in the sixth. Caleb Stewart reached on a two-out single and stole second. Emmanuel Garcia followed with a base hit to left-center, scoring Stewart for a 4-3 B-Mets lead. Copeland's RBI double in the seventh tied the game 4-4 and sent it into extras. Connecticut reliever Justin Hedrick (2-3) began the bottom of the 14th by retiring Coronado on a flyout. Murphy followed with a blast over the rightfield fence for the victory. Eddie Camacho (4-3) tossed three scoreless innings for the win. Saturday, the Binghamton Mets play the third game of a four-game series against the Connecticut Defenders. Bobby Parnell (9-4, 3.94) starts for Binghamton against Dave McKae (6-4, 4.39) of Connecticut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast beginning at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: Murphy's walk-off homer was the first for the B-Mets since 4/9/06 vs. AKR, when Jorge Padilla's solo blast won the game in the 15th...the B-Mets have four walk-off wins this season...Copeland was 5 for 6, becoming the first player with a five-hit game against Binghamton since Kevin Kouzmanoff 5/4/06 @ AKR...Binghamton is 5-2 in extra-inning contests this season...the game was the longest for the B-Mets this season in terms of innings and time (4:13).
