Connecticut Defenders News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY- It took 14 innings and over 4 hours, but the Defenders eventually fell to the Binghamton Mets by a final of 5-4.

The Mets jumped ahead in the last of the first when top prospect Fernando Martinez led the inning off with a triple. Jose Coronado was asked to perform some situational hitting duties and he delivered with an RBI groundout to the right side of the infield to make it 1-0 Binghamton.

The Defs fought back in the third when Ben Copeland drove Olmo Rosario to the dish on a flair single to center to knot the game at 1-1.

The B-Mets swung things back into their favor in the home half of three as a two-out rally was sparked. Coronado doubled, Dan Murphy doubled him home and Ambiorix Concepcion slapped a single to score Murphy as Binghamton grabbed a 3-1 advantage.

Connecticut got even in the fifth as Copeland and Pablo Sandoval lashed back-to-back run scoring singles to score Rosario and then Antoan Richardson to tie things up, 3-3.

Binghamton found the run column again in the bottom of the sixth as Emmanuel Garcia sent Caleb Stewart home on a single as the Mets teetered the game back to their favor, 4-3.

The Defenders re-tied the game in the top of the seventh on Copeland's third RBI of the day, a double, to score the speedy Richardson from first. At the middle of seven, it was Connecticut, 4, Binghamton, 4.

The game stayed at a standstill for awhile. To be exact, it lasted six and one half innings. Jason Waddell, Ronnie Ray and Kelvin Pichardo all avoided dangerous situations and threw scoreless frames. Justin Hedrick looked to be in control as well but NYSEG Stadium got the better of the fly-ball pitcher.

In the bottom of the 14th, Mike Carp launched a home run over the right field wall to send the crowd in Binghamton home happy with a 5-4 win.

Hedrick dropped his third game of the year, Eddie Camacho won his fourth and the series tied up at one game a piece.

The two squads will tangle on Saturday evening in Binghamton at 7:05pm. Check out every pitch with Brian Irizarry on the Defenders Radio Network or anywhere in the world at ctdefenders.com.
