Aerodynamics...

Even Steven...The Aeros survived a late charge against normally impenetrable closer Randy Newsom yesterday, as the sidewinder allowed two runs and had the tying run on base before striking out Kevin Nelson to preserve a 7-6 victory over Reading. The win allowed Akron to split its eight-game homestand at 4-4, and also ensured that the Aeros would not lose their first homestand of the year. Akron has not finished below .500 on a homestand since losing three of four to Reading from July 7th-10th of last year, and the Aeros are now 28-16 at Canal Park this season.

Crowe About It...DH Trevor Crowe was the sparkplug again for Akron yesterday, reaching base three times and scoring three runs from the top spot in the order. He got Akron on the board with a ringing RBI triple off the wall in right-center in the third inning, and then provided the winning margin with a solo home run leading off the bottom of the eighth. Crowe has hit in eight of his last 11 games, and has collected at least two hits in all eight contests. Today he won his second straight Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week award, hitting .464 (13-28) with two doubles, a triple, two homers, 11 runs scored, 10 RBI, four walks and two stolen bases in seven games. Crowe is the first player to win back-to-back weekly awards since Harrisburg's Dee Haynes in 2005, and is believed to be the first Aero to ever win consecutive weekly awards (anyone who can confirm or deny that is kindly asked to contact the Aeros Media Relations department).

Five the Hard Way...RF Bronson Sardinha also had a big game for the Aeros in yesterday's triumph, reaching base all five times he came to the plate. The native of Kailua, HI doubled in the first, walked in the third, dropped a gorgeous surprise bunt down the third base line in the fifth, and then drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Finally, Sardinha capped his big day in the eighth when Reading reliever Justin Pope drilled him with a pitch. Coincidentally, the two were teammates for parts of the last five seasons in the New York Yankees organization.

A Family Affair...Although Bronson Sardinha had a bigger day, it's fair to say his family's attention was slightly diverted by the happenings in Detroit yesterday. That's because Bronson's big brother Dane roped a two-run triple to left-center off Colorado's Matt Herges in the bottom of the sixth inning at Comerica Park, Dane's first Major League hit and the winning runs in Detroit's 4-3 victory. It was actually Dane Sardinha's second trip to the big leagues; he appeared in one game for Cincinnati in 2003 and went 0-2. Bronson Sardinha made his Major League debut September 15th of last year for the New York Yankees, and collected his first hit September 27th at Tampa Bay (a sixth-inning single off Scott Kazmir). The third Sardinha brother, middle-child Duke, retired June 7th after reaching AAA for one game with Colorado Springs in 2005.
