(Trenton, NJ)- Thunder starting pitcher Eric Hacker tossed seven solid innings as Trenton defeated Portland 6-1 on Monday night from Waterfont Park. Trenton has now won three straight over Portland, and the Thunder have opened a five-game lead over the Sea Dogs in the Northern Division.
Trenton (50-32) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning off of Portland starting pitcher Dave Gassner (0-4). With one out in the frame, CF Austin Jackson connected on a solo home run for his 8th home run of the season. In the 3rd inning, the Thunder broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single by 1B Chris Malec. Trenton made it 3-1 in the 4th inning on an RBI double by 3B Carlos Mendoza and added another run on a sacrifice fly RBI by 2B Reegie Corona. The lead increased to 5-1 in the 5th inning on an RBI double by LF Edwar Gonzalez. Corona capped off the scoring with a solo home run in the 6th inning for his 2nd home run of the season. Corona finished 2 x 3 with 2 R and an 2 RBI in the win. Mendoza and SS Ramiro Pena also had two hits. Gassner (0-4) gave up 6 R (4 ER) in 5.2 IP to take the loss.
Hacker (3-1) went 7 IP and allowed 6 H and 1 ER. He struck out 3 and did not walk a batter. He retired 9 in a row at one point. He has pitched at least 6 IP in four of his last 5 starts, and given up a combined 4 ER in his last five starts. Thunder reliever Michael Gardner hurled a perfect inning of relief in the 8th in his first appearance since being activated from the Disabled List. Thunder reliever Jose Valdez pitched a scoreless 9th inning in his Thunder debut.
Trenton and Portland are back in action on Tuesday night in the second game of the four-game series from Waterfront Park. RHP George Kontos (3-7, 3.27) will start for Trenton against Portland LHP Kris Johnson (6-3, 3.32). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
