Aerodynamics...

Nearly Perfect...To say that Akron LHP Ryan Edell was on his game last night would be about as big an understatement as saying such musical luminaries as the Beatles or perhaps Everclear are simply "okay" as artists. Edell completely wiped out the Fisher Cats lineup through the first seven innings, carrying a perfect game into the eighth inning. The Boston native retired the first 22 men he faced and did not allow a ball to leave the infield until the final out in the fourth. New Hampshire finally got to him in the eighth inning when Scott Campbell drew a full count walk with one out. Edell's no-hit bid came to an end on his next pitch (a single to left by Eric Nielsen), and his shutout bid ended on the pitch after that (a bloop RBI single by Anthony Hatch). Edell's final line featured 7.1 magnificent innings, allowing a run on two hits, one walk, and notching five strikeouts. LHP Shawn Nottingham also impressed, relieving Edell and retiring the final five hitters of the game in order. The Aeros have never had a perfect game in their history but have had two no-hitters, both of which came in 2003. The last one occurred July 7th when Chad Durbin and Oscar Alvarez combined to no-hit the Bowie Baysox.

A Quick Start...With Edell throwing the way he was, Akron's early 4-0 lead last night could well have been 40-0. In the first inning, a double and two walks loaded the bases with one out for RBI machine RF Bronson Sardinha, who stroked a two-run single to center to give the Aeros a 2-0 lead (Sardinha has 10 RBI in eight games with Akron). After 1B Matt Whitney walked to re-load the bases, DH Stephen Head drove in a run with a sac fly to center. 3B Wes Hodges then made it 4-0 in the second with a sac fly of his own, and that was more than enough as Akron improved to 19-4 when scoring first (an .826 winning percentage). An RBI double from Whitney in the seventh and a two-run single from 2B Josh Rodriguez in the eighth capped the scoring for the Aeros, who collected 13 hits and seven walks but also left a season-high 12 men on base.

The Drive for Five...Akron C Chris Gimenez reached base in all five plate appearances yesterday with three singles and two walks, and has now reached base in seven consecutive plate appearances dating to his last two PAs Tuesday evening. His perfect night yesterday pushed him into the league lead in on-base percentage at .473, and top intern Brendan Bittner reports that Gimenez also leads the league in walks with 43 (Altoona's Jason Delaney is second with 39).

Streaking...Josh Rodriguez pushed his hitting streak to nine games with his second straight multi-hit game, during which he is hitting .289 (11-38). Bronson Sardinha also has a seven-game hitting streak and an RBI in six of his last seven games.

Did You Know...Tonight's starter Kevin Dixon is making his first start away from Canal Park since April 19th. In two starts on the road this season, Dixon is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA.
