Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders lost a sea-saw battle to the Trenton Thunder in a rubber match at Dodd Stadium by a final of 9-6.
Connecticut got started right off the bat in the home half of the first as they plated a couple of runs on a two-run homer by Travis Ishikawa. Ishikawa's bomb was his third in as many days and gave the Defenders a 2-0 advantage.
Trenton got one back in the top of the second inning as Eladio Rodriguez delivered a two-out double to bring Jose Tabata home to make it 2-1 Connecticut.
The Defs were right back to work in the second inning as they plated two runs in the frame. Simon Klink crushed his first homer of the season to lead off the inning and Ben Copeland singled home Jake Wald from second as Connecticut took a commanding 4-1 lead.
After a scoreless third and fourth, the Thunder's bats erupted for four runs in the fifth. Ramiro Pena had an RBI single, Austin Jackson sent two men to the plate on a double and the rally was capped off by Chris Malec who singled home a run of his own to make it 5-4 Trenton.
Connecticut responded in the bottom of the fifth on Copeland's second RBI single of the day to equalize the game at 5-5.
No runs in the sixth, but the Defenders re-claimed the lead in the seventh. Copeland's one-out walk sparked a short rally for the home team. Ishikawa followed with a walk of his own, and with Eddy Martinez-Esteve at the dish, the runners took off and successfully moved into scoring position. Two pitches later, Martinez-Esteve lifted a sac fly to center to bring Copeland across home at Connecticut re-took a one-run lead.
Trenton came right back in the eighth inning on an RBI triple off the bat of Carlos Mendoza to tie things back up, 6-6.
With considerable momentum, Trenton surged ahead in the final inning of play. In the frame, the Thunder scored three times as they snatched a 9-6 lead they would not relinquish.
The Defenders will hit the road for a week as they will open up against the Altoona Curve on Friday night at 7:05pm. To listen to all the action, tune into the Defenders' Radio Network or visit ctdefenders.com for further information.
