Fisher Cats bow out to Aeros

New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release


Manchester, NH- Scott Campbell went 3-for-3 with a double, two singles, two walks and two runs scored to reclaim the Eastern League lead in batting, but the Akron Aeros rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 8-5, before 4,512 fans at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Thursday night.

Campbell, who is now batting .358, led off the game with a double off Aeros' starter Kevin Dixon and scored when Travis Snider (2-for-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R, 2 BB) singled to centerfield.

Akron (31-26) tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the second inning against Ricky Romero when Stephen Head (2-for-5, 2B, R) doubled and scored on a Ryan Goleski (2-for-3, RBI, R, BB) single to left field.

Kyle Phillips (0-for-4, RBI) had a run-scoring ground out in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Snider and staking New Hampshire to a 2-1 lead.

Jacob Butler (0-for-3, RBI, BB) made it 3-1 on an RBI ground out in the fifth inning, scoring Campbell (single). Anthony Hatch (2-for-4, 2 RBI) added a two-out, two-run single, scoring Aaron Mathews (2-for-5, R) and Snider for a 5-1 Fisher Cats' lead.

Akron began its comeback with two runs off Romero in the top of the sixth inning. Trevor Crowe (2-for-3, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R) walked, moved to third when Chris Gimenez (2-for-4, 2B, R, IW) doubled and scored on a Wes Hodges (1-for-3, 2 RBI, BB) ground out. Bronson Sardinha (1-for-4, SF, 2 RBI) plated Gimenez with a single, trimming the Fisher Cats' lead to 5-3.

The Aeros moved in front against losing pitcher Julio Pinto (4-2) in the top of the seventh inning. Ryan Goleski led off with an infield single. One out later, Crowe drew a walk and Jose Rodriguez (1-for-4, RBI, R) hit an RBI single, scoring Goleski. Hodges drew a bases-loaded walk, and Sardinha added a sacrifice fly off Daryl Harang, allowing Akron to take a 6-5 lead.

Pinto yielded three runs on three hits in one-third of an inning. He struck out one and walked two.

Akron tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning, building an 8-5 lead on Crowe's RBI double off Harang and a Brian Jeroloman passed ball that allowed Brandon Chaves, who walked, to score from third.

Erik Stiller (2-1) worked three shutout innings of relief to notch the victory. The right-hander struck out five and allowed only two singles.

Randy Newsom worked around ninth-inning walks to Jeroloman (0-for-3, BB) and Campbell to earn his Eastern League-leading 17th save.

The Fisher Cats open a three-game series against the Erie SeaWolves Friday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Left-hander A.J. Wideman (3-7, 6.21) takes the mound for New Hampshire against Erie righty Josh Rainwater (3-2, 6.16) in a 7:05pm game. Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy.

NOTE: Prior to Thursday night's Law Enforcement Night game, Manchester Police Department Chief David Mara presented Manchester native Edward Russell with the Officer Michael Briggs Community Hero Award. The Fisher Cats' specially-designed New Hampshire Law Enforcement uniforms were auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Manchester Police Athletic League (PAL).
