AKRON, OHIO - The Akron Aeros and Akron Fire Department are teaming up and holding Limited Victim Incident (LVI) drills for the first time at Canal Park on Tuesday, June 25 and Wednesday, June 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Akron Police Department and the Summit County Bomb Squad will be participating in the drill-only exercises. Drills will involve mock casualties and simulated emergency scenarios. Mock patients will be treated by Akron Fire paramedics, and there will be emergency vehicles on South Main Street throughout the drills.

"Given recent events such as the tragedy at the Boston Marathon, we want to ensure Canal Park is a safe venue for fans, families, our players, and our staff," said Aeros General Manager Jim Pfander.

Canal Park was chosen because it provides a realistic setting for an incident and because the Aeros recognize the importance of these types of training exercises for both emergency responders and Aeros' front office personnel. Similar drills have been conducted at the Rubber Bowl and in local-area schools, particularly in during summertime.

"We are confident in our current safety and security structure, but preparation and prevention can make all the difference in an emergency," said Pfander.

There may be some real-life sights and sounds such as sirens, but surrounding businesses and nearby traffic flow will not be interrupted.

Questions regarding the drills may be directed to Captain Joe Natko of the Akron Fire Department EMS Bureau, 330-375-2071.
