Trenton Thunder News Release

(Akron OH) - Nik Turley tossed seven shutout innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hitter as the TrentonThunder blanked the Akron Aeros, 1-0, to finish a three-game series sweep Thursday night at Canal Park.

Jose Pirela's two-out RBI double in the seventh plated the lone run of the contest as the Thunder (36-35) earned their third sweep of 2013 and reached the halfway point of the season at one game above the .500 mark overall.

Turley (6-5) became just the second Trenton hurler this season to last seven innings. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out four and snapping a personal three-start losing skid. Danny Burawa and Tommy Kahnle pitched around five combined walks in the eighth and ninth respectively to finish the win.

The Thunder pitching staff held Akron to just four total runs in the three-game series, with the starting pitchers - Sean Black, Shane Greene and Turley - earning the victory in each of the contests.

After being held to just one hit by Akron starter Jordan Cooper (3-3) through 6.2 innings, Trenton scored with two outs in the seventh when Reegie Corona singled and Pirela lined his RBI double over the left-fielder's head to the fence. It was the second straight night the Pirela picked up the game-winning RBI.

Kahnle loaded the bases with three walks in the ninth, but was able to strike out Ronny Rodriguez on three pitches to end the game and pick up his ninth save of the season in as many opportunities.

The Thunder next return to ARM & HAMMER Park for a six-game homestand in which they welcome Portland for three games and then Erie for three. The Portland series begins Friday at 7:05 pm, with right-hander Scottie Allen (NR) expected to make his EL debut for the Thunder against lefty Drake Britton (6-5, 3.08).

Limited tickets are available through the Thunder box office at (609) 394-3300 or online at www.trentonthunder.com. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.
