WILKES-BARRE, PA - John Curry stopped all 32 shots he saw to hand the Norfolk Admirals (19-24-2-5) a 5-0 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (32-16-1-2) on Sunday evening at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton opened scoring with a pair of goals 15 seconds apart late in the first period. The Penguins took a 1-0 lead when Dustin Jeffrey batted in the rebound of a Jon D'Aversa shot at 16:56. Jean-Michel Daoust then one-timed a Jeff Taffe feed from the left circle past Norfolk netminder Riku Helenius at 17:11.
The Penguins used another pair of quick tallies to double their lead in the middle frame. Taffe sent a backhand pass from the left circle to Daoust in the right circle for another one-timer goal at 10:14. Mark Letestu made it 4-0 for the home team when he found his own rebound in the goalmouth and sent a shot over the outstretched right leg of Helenius at 11:23.
Janne Pesonen closed out scoring at 15:24 of the final frame when he deflected a Letestu feed past new Admirals goaltender Tyler Sims.
Riku Helenius (35 shots, 31 saves) took the loss through 49:24. Tyler Sims (6 shots, 5 saves) made his AHL/Admirals debut in relief and did not receive a decision through 10:36. John Curry (32 shots, 32 saves) earned the victory.
Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 1-2.
