San Antonio Rampage News Release

ROCHESTER, NY (February 8, 2009) - Al Montoya got back in the saddle and San Antonio rode their goalie to a 2-1 win in Rochester on Sunday night at Blue Cross Arena. It was San Antonio's first win on their 13-game Rodeo Road Trip and their third straight game to earn a point, 1-2-1-1, through five games.

Rochester entered last in the AHL in team points with 38 while San Antonio was looking to creep past idle Quad City into seventh place in the AHL West.

The Americans outshot San Antonio 12-6 in the first period, but Rampage goalie Al Montoya had the door closed turning aside all 12 attempts.

While Rochester goalie Tyler Plante, 1-6 with a 4.04 GAA, didn't see much first period fire, he showed up early in the second period stopping the first ten shots he faced. Forward David Spina cracked thru with a rebound goal with 2:21 remaining in the second period for the game's first tally and 1-0 San Antonio lead.

Defenseman Jeff May tallied his first AHL point assisting on Spina's 13th goal of the season.

San Antonio, 17-2-0-1 when leading after the second period, gave Montoya an insurance goal 2:58 into the third when rookie forward Adam Perry scored unassisted to extend the lead to 2-0. Perry, in his first appearance since his recall to San Antonio, scored his first AHL goal after playing in eight games with the Rampage in October and November.

Perry was reassigned to San Antonio on February 2nd fresh off being named the Oakley/CHL Player of the Week while recording 5 goals and 3 assists including a hat trick, in three games with Arizona. Perry was making his first appearance with the Rampage since a November 15th game at Peoria.

Then it was Montoya and the Rampage defense that took control. Rochester could only squeeze out a Michal Repik goal with 2:25 remaining in regulation and San Antonio held the Americans to only 14 shots in the final 40 minutes of play.

Montoya, who entered 2-13 with a 3.84 GAA, saved 25 of 26 shots to earn his first win since New Year's Day and improve to 3-13-0.

The Americans held San Antonio's AHL leading road power-play team at bay, 0-5, but struggled against the Rampage penalty kill going scoreless in six chances.

The Rampage leave New York with 47 points, 8 points out of 4th place in the West and a guaranteed playoff spot. The win also moves the Rampage past Quad City into 7th place with 25 games remaining in the regular season.
