Laliberte's Late Goal Puts Phantoms Past Bridgeport

PHILADELPHIA - David Laliberte scored with 3:22 left in regulation to give the Philadelphia Phantoms a 2-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday night at the Wachovia Spectrum. The win snapped a three-game slide for the Phantoms and pulled them within five points of the Sound Tigers in the race for the final playoff position in the East Division.
After a scoreless first period, the Phantoms jumped on the board 3:38 into the second frame. Danny Syvret fired a shot from the left-center point that passed through pedestrian traffic in the slot and beat Nathan Lawson high to the right side. It was Syvret's 43rd point of the year, extending his league lead among defensemen, and it gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.
It held until late in the second period when Bridgeport's Jamie Fraser scored with 59.5 seconds on the clock. He joined a rush as the trailing player, took a pass from Dustin Kohn and snapped a puck high over the glove of Scott Munroe. Fraser's fourth of the year made it a 1-1 game after two periods.
Laliberte's heroics came off the rebound of a shot from the right point by Nate Guenin. The puck was deflected wide by Jonathan Matsumoto, but the ricochet off the end boards came right out past the left post to Laliberte. He fired it into an open net before Lawson could dive back to cover the post. The Phantoms held Bridgeport off for the final minutes to get the win.
Munroe made 35 saves to take his 21st win of the year, while Lawson absorbed the loss with 27 stops.
The win wraps up a season-long six-game homestand for the Phantoms. They'll return to action on Wednesday night with the start of a three game road trip, which comes in Lowell, Mass. against the Devils. Philadelphia will return home on Monday, February 16 for a 5:05 President's Day start against the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Wachovia Center.
