Admirals reign over Monarchs
February 15, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
Matt Keith had a goal and an assist and the Admirals thrived on late-period goals as they defeated the Manchester Monarchs 5-2.
With two minutes to go in the opening frame, it appeared as if the teams would skate to their locker rooms in a scoreless tie. However, Norfolk changed that quickly. Mark Cullen skated into the attack zone as the extra attacker on a Monarchs delayed penalty. He received the puck and sent a shot from the top of the circle that beat goaltender Barry Brust at 18:39. Then, as time wound down in the period, Jason Morgan found the puck in a goalmouth scramble and sent it to Pavel Vorobiev, who buried it with only a fraction of a second remaining. The late-period goals gave Norfolk a 2-0 edge heading into the middle stanza.
Manchester briefly tied the game midway through the second. Brad Smyth scored a five-on-three power play goal at 8:37. Forty-six seconds later with only one Admiral in the sin bin, Petr Kanko knotted the score at 2-2 at 9:13. However, the Admirals took the lead for good in the last quarter of the period. Nathan Barrett sent a pass from deep in the zone to Martin St. Pierre between the hash marks. St. Pierre's initial shot was stopped, but he stashed his own rebound into the back of the net at 16:24. A couple of minutes later, Milan Bartovic sent a shot from the right circle. The puck caromed off the goalie to Matt Keith in the left circle, who fired it top shelf at 18:48. Just 22 seconds later, Bartovic flipped a backhander past Brust off another goalmouth scramble at 19:10 to make the score 5-3 Norfolk. That would be the final score as Corey Crawford stopped all five Manchester third period shots to cement the victory.
Corey Crawford stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced and got the win. Barry Brust made 23 saves on 28 Admirals' shots through two periods and was saddled with the loss. Adam Hauser came into the game at the start of the third, stopping all ten shots.
Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play while Manchester was 2-6.

1. Matt Keith - NOR
