Admirals clinch playoff berth with weekend sweep

NORFOLK, VA - The Admirals ended a four-game road tilt by sweeping all three weekend games, and clinched a playoff spot for the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs. After dropping a 5-0 contest at Philadelphia on March 29th, Norfolk rebounded to defeat Albany 4-1 on the 31st. The next night, Adam Munro stopped 34 of 35 shots and Scott Bertoli scored his first AHL career goal as the Admirals downed Binghamton 3-1. Norfolk synched a playoff berth with a 3-2 win at Hartford on April 2nd, behind a two-goal night by Nathan Barrett and a three-point performance by Mike Brown.

STANDINGS

At 39-27-4-4 (86 pts), Norfolk is currently third in the East. The division is led by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (47-17-5-5, 104 pts), followed by Hershey (42-20-4-10, 98 pts) in second. Bridgeport (37-29-6-3, 83 pts) is in fourth, while Binghamton (32-33-4-4, 72 pts) and Philadelphia (32-34-1-7, 72 pts) are tied for fifth.

TEAM NOTEBOOK

- With victories of 4-1 at Albany on March 31st and 3-1 at Binghamton on April 1st, the Admirals held their foes to one or fewer goals on the road for just the third and fourth times this season. Norfolk is 4-0-0-0 in road matches and 10-1-0-0 overall when the opposition scores fewer than two goals.

- Norfolk's shutout loss at Philadelphia on March 29th was just the team's second such loss and first road shutout loss this season. The Ads' other blanking also came against Philadelphia on October 22nd at Scope.

- Adam Munro has won five consecutive decisions (since March 17th vs. Hartford) and six of seven starts. He has not allowed more than two goals in each of the six victories.

- Martin St. Pierre netted his 20th goal of the year at Albany on March 31st, marking the first time in franchise history the Admirals have had five players with 20 or more goals scored (Barrett, Corazzini, Cullen, Keith).

- Scott Bertoli collected his first AHL career point with an assist at Albany on March 31st and scored his first AHL career goal at Binghamton on April 1st.

- Corey Crawford ended a five-game losing streak (since March 5th) with a win at Hartford on April 2nd.

- SPCA Night - The Norfolk SPCA will hold its annual raffle and silent auction of numerous sports memorabilia and donations from local businesses on the concourse by Gate 14. Proceeds to benefit the Norfolk SPCA.

- Mascot Mania - a variety of sports teams' and business' mascots invade Scope to entertain fans of all ages.

- Celebrity Hockey Game - Before the Admirals' game, come watch a slew of local celebrities face off in a special afternoon hockey game at 5:30 p.m. to benefit the American Cancer Society's "Relay For Life".
