Iowa Chops News Release
CLEVELAND, OH - The Iowa Stars departed Milwaukee, Wisconsin Friday night and traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to play the Cleveland Barons on Saturday night. With a third period goal by Loui Eriksson, the Stars were able to post a 3-1 win and extend their win streak to five straight games. Coupled with an Omaha Knights shootout loss, the Stars pulled to within two points of the fourth and final playoff spot held by Omaha.
After a scoreless first period that saw Iowa outshoot the Barons 10-2, the Barons were able to grab a 1-0 lead at 7:37 of the second period when Shane Joseph scored his 11th of the season. Rookie defenseman Nicklas Grossman scored his first of the season to even the score at one just over 10 minutes later. Chris Conner and Vojtech Polak picked-up the assists.
At 12:33 of the third period, Mario Scalzo sprung Loui Eriksson for a long breakaway. The Swedish-born rookie then raced into the Cleveland zone and stuffed-home a shot through the legs of Cleveland goaltender Nolan Schaefer. The goal gave Iowa a 2-1 lead. Eriksson's goal, his 24th of the year, ties him with Junior Lessard for the team lead.
Toby Petersen sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:58 of the third period. With an assist on the goal, Lessard extended his points-streak to four games.
