Alaska Aces News Release

PHOENIX - Former Ace Gino Guyer had a goal and an assist and rookie goaltender Kyle Jones stopped 38 shots as Phoenix ended its seven-game winless skid and snapped a six-game winning streak for Alaska with a 3-1 victory Thursday before 3,033 at US Airways Center.

The Aces (40-22-3) remain five points ahead of idle Idaho in the West Division race, but the Steelheads now enjoy three games in hand. Alaska had swept the Roadrunners in a four-game series played in Anchorage last week, but did not get on the board until just 3:03 remained in regulation.

Phoenix had been 0-for-24 on the power play against the Aces before Daniel Sisca scored off the rush at the 8:23 mark of the second period, which marked only the second goal allowed by Alaska's league-best penalty kill unit in 67 chances over a 17-game span. Guyer's goal, a backhander through the pads of J.P. Lamoureux, came off a sloppy Aces turnover and gave the 'Runners a 2-0 edge with 5:43 left in the second period.

Guyer helped set up James McEwan's goal off the rush at 2:43 of the final period that pushed the margin to three. McEwan had come into the game with one goal and 178 penalties in minutes. Head Coach Keith McCambridge pulled Lamoureux and took a time-out with 3:26 left in the contest, setting up a play that would result in Lance Galbraith's 17th goal of the year 23 seconds later, but the Aces drew no closer, despite taking the game's last 14 shots on goal.

The teams meet again tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. AT before Alaska heads to Las Vegas for a Saturday night date with the Wranglers at 6:30 p.m. AT. Both weekend games will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750, with Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off.
