Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska peppered Long Beach goaltender Colin Zulianello with a season-high 47 shots and finally broke through in the third period and overtime of an eventual 2-1 victory over the Ice Dogs Wednesday before 3,192 at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces outplayed the visitors through much of the first period, but failed to score on three power play chances and had to settle for a scoreless tie despite a 13-5 shots advantage. Long Beach started the middle frame quickly, generating numerous chances until Dan Vandermeer found Craig Lyons in the slot, who wheeled and fired the puck past Alaska goaltender Dan Murphy at the 3:55 mark. The goal marked the first time in 10 games that the Aces had not scored first.

Trailing 1-0 entering the third, Alaska finally got the equalizer when Charles Linglet flipped in a rebound on the power play at 1:52. The Aces kept coming, despite playing their seventh game in nine nights, and found the energy to muster 12 third period shots and 10 more in the overtime, as Zulianello refused to wilt under heavy fire. But with Alaska having been awarded another power play late in the extra session, Kimbi Daniels found Smith open in the slot and the latter snapped the puck five-hole for the victory, the fourth straight for the Aces (14-8-1 overall).

Murphy picked up the win with 27 saves for Alaska, who will take Thursday off and practice Friday before heading to San Diego for a clash with the Gulls Sunday at 4:00 p.m. AST. The Aces lead second-place Las Vegas (4-2 winners over Atlantic City Wednesday) by a point in the Pacific Division standings, although the Wranglers have two games in hand. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
