Alaska Aces News Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego captain Mike Garrow forced overtime with 4:22 left to play, then Trevor Koenig turned aside all four Alaska tries in the shootout as the Gulls nipped the Alaska Aces 4-3 Wednesday before 3,428 at the San Diego Sports Arena.

The Aces dominated much of the first period and broke through at 8:07 against San Diego starter Mathieu Chouinard, as Mike Jones scored on a wraparound for his first goal in 42 games as an Ace. The Gulls quickly tied the contest when Darren Clark scored on a redirection at 10:34. With Alaska pressing to regain the lead, Chouinard had to leave the game after stopping Mike Lee from point blank range and was replaced by Koenig, who had beaten the Aces with 42 saves on Sunday. Shortly after Koenig entered the fray, San Diego had its first lead, as Nikita Korovkin scored on a wrist shot that beat Alaska starter Peter Aubry five-hole.

Trailing 2-1, the Aces tied the game while on the power play, as Mike Scott tipped in a Jones drive from the point at 8:35. Less than two minutes later, Lee pushed Alaska back into the lead at 3-2 when he slipped a rebound past Koenig. That goal looked like it might hold up as the game-winner until the Gulls received one last crack at a power play with five minutes left. Garrow fired home a rebound with 4:22 left to send the game into overtime, and, eventually a shootout as neither team could score despite several quality chances. Mark Pederson and Billy Tibbetts scored for the Gulls in the shootout, while Chris Minard, Jordan Cameron, Kimbi Daniels, and Olivier Filion failed to score against Koenig, who had been outdueled by Aubry under similar circumstances last Friday in Anchorage.

The Aces, who managed 41 shots on goal despite playing their fifth game in six nights, remain in fifth place in the West Division with a 2-4-1 record. Alaska takes a much-needed day off tomorrow before heading to Fresno (1-4-1) for two games against the Falcons Friday and Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. ADT, with live radio coverage on AM 750 KFQD and at www.alaskaaces.com beginning 20 minutes before the puck drops at the Save-Mart Center.
