San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Gulls trailed late in the third period, but Mike Garrow tied it and Trevor Koenig was perfect in the shootout as the Blue and Orange came from behind to beat the Alaska Aces 4-3.

It was a seesaw battle all game long. Alaska (2-4-1) took an early lead before the Gulls (3-2-1) scored two straight to take a 2-1 lead. The Aces reversed the score again with two of their own, before Garrow tied it with 4:22 left in regulation.

In the shootout it was all Gulls, as two of their three shooters scored. That was more than enough for Koenig, who stopped all four Alaska shooters.

Alaska jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Mike Jones' first goal of the season 8:07 into the opening frame. Olivier Fillion had the puck in the right corner before whipping a cross-ice feed to Jones, standing at the left point. Jones faked a shot, then skated all the way around the net before wrapping it in past a diving Mathieu Chouinard.

The Gulls answered with back-to-back goals later in the first period to take a 2-1 lead. Darren Clark knocked in San Diego's first goal – literally – at 10:34, redirecting in Garrow's point shot off his face. It was Clark's fourth goal and extended his point-scoring streak to five games. Billy Tibbetts assisted on both goals, also extending his point streak to five games.

Nikita Korovkin then notched his second goal of the season at 16:20, wristing a shot that trickled through the pads of a screened Peter Aubry. The marker came with Koenig in net, as Chouinard had to leave the game 20 seconds earlier with a groin injury.

The Aces regained a one-goal cushion in the second with two goals 1:56 apart. The first came at 8:35 on a power-play goal by Mike Scott, redirecting in Jones' slap shot from the point. Mike Lee gave Alaska a 3-2 advantage at 10:31, swatting home a shot right in front of the crease. It was Scott's third goal and Lee's second of the season respectively.

San Diego caught a break early in the third period when it appeared that Alaska scored again, but referee Travis Smith ruled the puck was touched with a high stick before knocked into the net.

The Gulls took advantage and tied the game, 3-3, with a power-play goal at 15:38, thanks to a deflection off an Aces defenseman. Garrow rocketed a slap shot that Aubry saved, but the rebounded caromed off Louis Mass' skate and into the net.

That's how things stayed through the remainder of regulation and the game headed to overtime. In the extra session both teams had quality chances. Alaska had a power play to close out overtime, but Koenig came up huge again.

In the shootout period, San Diego got goals form Mark Pederson and Guillaume Fournier. Koenig stopped all four Alaska shooters: Fillion, Jordan Cameron, Kimbi Daniels and Chris Minard.

Scott's power-play marker was Alaska's first against the Gulls this season (1 for 22)... Clark has eight points (4g, 4a) during his five-game point streak... Tibbetts has seven points (4g, 3a) during his five-game point streak... Boris Protsenko was taken off the San Diego roster. He couldn't sign with the Gulls because his rights are still owned by the South Carolina Stingrays...
