Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Game
The Aberdeen IronBirds look to get back in the win column tonight as they open up a three-game series at home against the Williamsport Crosscutters (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies). The IronBirds are coming off a three-game set at the State College Spikes in which they dropped two of three games. Last night, the IronBirds fell in 10 innings by a final score of 5-4. A back and forth battle throughout, Aberdeen tied the game in the ninth inning to send it to extra innings. Sam Gonzalez hit a game-winning single in the 10th off of Aberdeen reliever Devin Jones to end the game. Tonight, the IronBirds will have right-handed pitcher Jose Mota on the hill. Mota is making his first start of the season. He'll go up against right-hander Colin Kleven.
Hobgood Pushed Back
Right-handed pitcher Matt Hobgood was originally slated to start tonight's game against the Crosscutters. He's been pushed back one day and will start tomorrow night's contest. Hobgood is getting an extra day of rest. He's coming back from a shoulder strain.
Starr Breaks Finger
Hot-hitting Infielder Sammie Starr fractured a finger sliding into third base in last night's loss at State College. Starr has not been placed on the Disabled List yet. It's unknown at this time how long he will be out. Starr was batting .284 with two homers and 15 RBI in 23 games played.
More Extra Baseball
The IronBirds have played extra-inning games each of the past two nights. They split the two 10-frame games at State College. On the season, the IronBirds are 4-4 in extra-inning games. Before last night's loss, Aberdeen had won four extra-inning games in-a-row.
Stay Hot Givens
Shortstop Mychal Givens is proving he might have been a New York-Penn League all-star snub. The former second-round pick is now leading the IronBirds in batting average (.296), runs scored (24), hits (59) and on-base percentage (.374). Givens has also stolen 11 bases in 13 attempts.
Cal Ripken World Series
The Opening Ceremonies of the Cal Ripken World Series is tonight at 6:30 PM at Cal Sr.'s Yard. The annual tournament will begin tomorrow at noon. Championship Weeknd (August 20thy-21st) will be broadcasted live on the MLB Network and on MLB.com.
