STATE COLLEGE, PA - Two RBI's from the All-Star Dean Green and a solid start from Matt Crouse led the Connecticut Tigers to a 4-1 win over the State College Spikes on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Spikes got out to an early lead striking in the first inning. Junior Sosa slapped a one-out single and advanced to third on a wild pitch from Tigers starter Crouse. Sosa later came in to score on a Samuel Gonzalez groundout to give State College a 1-0 lead.
Connecticut would come roaring back in the sixth inning, after Spikes starter Matt Benedict was taken out of the game. Benedict threw five shutout frames before giving way to Josh Poytress in the sixth. Tyler Collins led off the inning by smacking a ball that hit 17 feet up on the 18-foot wall in right field. He settled for a double and Aaron Westlake followed by drawing a walk. Green slapped an RBI base hit to score Collins and tie the game at one. He now has an RBI in each of his last four games.
Jason King later in the inning put the Tigers in front with a sacrifice fly to score Westlake from third, giving Connecticut a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers would add two more runs in the eighth frame, as Green added his second RBI single and Westlake came in to score on a wild pitch, extending the Connecticut lead to 4-1.
Fernando Celis came out of the bullpen in relief of Crouse and tossed three one-hit innings, holding the Spikes off the board. Melvin Mercedes came in to shut the door in the ninth, retiring the side in order.
Crouse gave up a run on four hits through five innings of work to earn his third win of the season and his second in a row, while Mercedes picked up his first save of the season.
The Tigers will play the second game of the three-game series against the State College Spikes tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
