NYPL Auburn Doubledays

Seventh Inning Gets Away in 7-4 Loss

August 12, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

Auburn, NY - Leading by a run going to the game's seventh inning, it looked like the Auburn Doubledays were on their way to another sweep of a Stedler Division foe. That all changed when Vermont batted around in the seventh, taking the lead and holding on for a 7-4 win on Thursday night.

The loss dropped the Doubledays into a tie for first-place with Mahoning Valley, who defeated Tri-City earlier on Thursday night.

After trailing 3-1 through three innings, the Doubledays battled back. One run came home in the fourth when a leadoff fielding error by Lake Monsters third baseman Michael Fabiaschi turned into a run on an RBI single by Bryce Orega. Auburn added two in the sixth on RBI singles by Caleb Ramsey and Matt Skole, giving them their first lead since 1-0.

Unlike the past two games, this lead didn't last.

Miscues allowed runners to reach in the top of the seventh for Vermont and fueled a four-run rally. First it was a fielding error by Bryce Ortega that allowed Fabiaschi to reach, then a dropped catch by first baseman Justin Miller, trying to retire Chih Fang Pan on a bunt attempt. Before the Doubledays knew it, two men were on and nobody was out.

After striking out Bobby Crocker, Doubledays reliever Kelvin Lopez walked Nick Rickles to load the bases, setting up a key at-bat for Vermont left fielder Dusty Robinson. Unlike the first two games of the series when Vermont struggled to get a clutch hit, going 1 for 17 with runners in scoring position, Robinson came through. A double down the left-field line scored two, putting the Lake Monsters up 5-4.

The Doubledays made a pitching change, bringing in Tyler Hanks for the first time this year. A former Hagerstown Sun, Hanks couldn't get out of the damage, walking the first man he faced before giving up a double to Xavier Macklin, scoring two more runs and increasing the Vermont lead to three.

From there, the Auburn offense was held in check, limited to just one hit in the final three innings as they fell for the first time in the series, 7-4.

The loss ended the Doubledays five-game home stand with a record of 3-2.

Auburn now heads back to the road, where they meet league leading Staten Island for three games before enjoying the All-Star Break. First pitch on Friday night from Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, NY is scheduled for 7:00pm. Fans are invited to listen to the 'Voice of the Doubledays,' John Miller, call the game live on 89.1 FM in Auburn, NY or at www.auburndoubledays.com.
