A Tale of Two Games for the Freedom

August 20, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release

(Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (36-46) pulled off their biggest come-from-behind victory of the season in a 10-9 victory in game one of Wednesday's double header with the Windy City ThunderBolts (31-52). But the Freedom were no-hit in an 8-0 loss in game two of the twin bill.

Chance Ross' dramatic three-run home run in the fifth inning of game one put the Freedom ahead for good in a game they once trailed 5-0.

Windy City got off to a fast start against Freedom starter Dave Middendorf as they scored one in the first and four in the second to take a 5-0 lead. A Max White RBI double plated Mike Torres for the first run of the game. Then in the second inning a bases clearing double off the bat of Andrew Brauer brought home three runs. Brauer scored on a throwing error by Middendorf.

Down 5-0, the Freedom scored four runs in the third. Chance Ross got things started with a single. One out later Cole Miles double and Zak Blair singled home Ross for the Freedom's first run of the game. Sam Eberle's sacrifice fly pushed across the second run of the inning. Jacob Tanis and Rolando Gomez followed with back-to-back doubles. Gomez's double brought in two more runs as Florence pulled to within one of Windy City.

A Ross double, an Eberle single and a Tanis sacrifice fly scored three runs in the very next inning as the Freedom took a 7-5 lead.

But the ThunderBolts struck back in the top of the fifth as White launched a two-run home run and Brauer smacked a two-RBI double.

Down 9-7, the Freedom took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Adam Taylor and Buddy Sosnoskie drew walks to start the frame. That set up Ross who launched his first home run as a member of the Florence Freedom.

The Freedom pounded out 12 hits in the win. Daniel DeSimone (4-3) earned the victory out of the bullpen.

Game two could not have been any more different.

Windy City took an early lead just like in game one but that's where the similarities end. Florence managed four base runners as Travis Tingle (8-5) no-hit them for the second time this season. He also no-hit the Freedom in Crestwood in a rain-shortened five-inning game back on June 19.

Meanwhile Michael O'Neal (2-5) allowed a couple of runs in the first and Windy City pulled away late against Florence's bullpen. The final blow was a White three-run home run in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-0.

That's how the game would end as the Freedom split the double header.

Florence will look to win the four-game series Thursday as they send Casey Henn (7-5, 2.90 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
