CornBelters Win Streak Ends in Narrow Loss to Boomers

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, ended a seven-game winning streak with a 4-3 loss to the Schaumburg Boomers on Wednesday night at the Corn Crib.

The Boomers scored first in the opening frame when Alexi Colon led off with a double, went to third after tagging on a foul out and came home on a fielder's choice ground out by Justin Vasquez.

The CornBelters responded in the third inning when Jhiomar Veras led off with a single and went to third on a base hit by Tyler Shover, then scored on a sacrifice fly down the right field line by Pat McKenna.

Schaumburg jumped ahead 4-1 with a one-out, three-run homer to the right field lawn by Gerard Hall in the fourth inning. Mike Schwartz led off the Belters fourth with a home run to left center to cut the Boomers lead to 4-2.

The Belters bounced back in the fifth inning with a lead-off double by Guillen followed by an RBI single by Santiago Chirino cut the deficit to 4-3.

The starters both went five innings and earned the decisions as Cal Bowling (7-7) took the win while Bobby Shore (4-6) suffered the loss. Dexter Price pitched a perfect ninth for his 20th save.

The Belters conclude the series with the Boomers on Miller Thirst Quenching Thursday featuring $1 beers and $2 margaritas plus post-game music from Clayton Anderson. First pitch is 7 p.m. with right-hander Mike Schweiss (4-2, 6.09 ERA) starting on the mound for Normal against Schaumburg's Seth Webster (5-4, 3.01).
