Lake Erie offense scores 22 runs in double header sweep

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers scored 22 times on 22 hits during Wednesday evening's double header at All Pro Freight Stadium, as they swept the twin bill, with 10-2 and 12-3 victories over the Gateway Grizzlies. .

The Crushers (49-33) have now won five in a row, 11 of their last 12, and are now 14-3 in August, while the losses for the Grizzlies (46-37) put them 3.5 games behind the Crushers for the sixth and final spot in the Frontier League playoffs.

In game one, Lake Erie took advantage of nine walks, and scored 10 times on eight hits. Gateway fired the first shot, scoring a pair of runs on a double from TJ Bennett in the top of the first inning.

Lake Erie tied the game in the bottom of the second, on a two-out, two-run double from Emmanuel Quiles. The game was suspended on Tuesday night due to rain, and picked up in the top of the third inning.

The Crushers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, without recording a hit. Five walks were issued in the inning, and bases loaded walks were issued to both Ryan Hutchison and Craig Hertler to give Lake Erie a 4-2 lead.

One inning later, the Crushers sent 10 batters to the plate, and scored six times on four hits to pull away. The inning was highlighted by three consecutive run scoring singles. Vince Mejia started that string with a RBI single to center, before Adam Ford stroked a two-run base hit to left, and Quiles followed with a RBI single to left.

Brad Zambron (3-0) tossed 3.1 hitless innings of scoreless relief and fanned three batters to score the victory while Luke Westphal (3-4) allowed a pair of runs on a hit while walking five and took the loss.

Lake Erie used a little two-out thunder to take a 3-0 lead in the third inning of game two. Andrew Davis went 4-for-4 in the second game, and his first hit was a two-out RBI single to give Lake Erie a 1-0 lead, and Anderson Hidalgo followed with a two-run homer, his fourth of the season.

Gateway came right back with a three-spot of their own to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Bennett brought in the first run on a RBI single to center. Michael Wing doubled Bennett home later in the inning and Ben Waldrip's sacrifice fly tied the game at 3-3.

The Crushers used a two more two-run homers over the next two innings, and put the game away with a five-run sixth inning. Trevor Stevens broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run homer, his second of the year, and Joey Burney did the same in the home half of the fifth.

Lake Erie's five-run sixth inning was highlighted by a two-run single from Kevin Franchetti, and an RBI single from Mejia.

Treece (7-3) tossed a scoreless inning of one-hit relief to score the win in game two. Kerry Kelley (3-6) allowed five run on six hits over 3.1 innings of work and took the loss.

Hertler reached in both games, and has now reached in 32 consecutive games, which is the longest on base streak of the season in the Frontier League. Quiles paced Lake Erie in game one, going 2-for-4 with a trio of RBIs. Game two saw three Crushers hit safely multiple times, including Davis who went 4-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Mejia and Stevens each went 3-for-4, while Mejia scored twice and Stevens drove in three runs.

The Crushers will finish their three-game series with the Gateway Grizzlies at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night. Righty Andy Roberts (1-0, 2.89) will start for the Crushers and right-hander Ja'Vaun West (7-2, 3.73) will start for the Grizzlies. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
