Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, and the River City Rascals split a doubleheader Wednesday to begin a pivotal three-game set at CONSOL Energy Park.

After two games away from live action, the Wild Things offense immediately connected for six runs in the first three innings en route to their 7-4 victory. In the top of the first, the Wild Things plated their first run of the night as Carter Bell connected on a 3-0 for a RBI triple, bringing Kalamar home, 1-0. Back-to-back two-run RBI singles by second baseman Garrett Rau and Kalamar stretched the Washington lead 5-0 in the second. The Rascals scored their first run of the series in the top of the third, however, designated hitter Maxx Garrett matched the Rascals run with his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot giving Washington a 6-2 lead. River City added two more scores in the top of the fifth, 6-4, but Washington stopped any threat of a comeback as Bell scored the Things' final run of game one on a wild pitch, 7-4, and closer Jonathan Kountis shut down the league's best team for the Wild Thing's 49th win of the season.

The Rascals earned the split taking the nightcap by a final score of 3-0. River City starter Joe Cuda tossed 5 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three hits and striking out a season-high eight batters in his third start of the season. The Rascals offense was quick to back their ace's performance scoring the only runs of the second game between the two teams combined in the top of the fourth. Down to their final out, Rascals designated hitter Joe Staley's patience at the plate earned him a walk. Three consecutive two-out singles by McConkey, Crespo highlighted by a two-run single by Myers gave River City the only runs they needed in the shutout victory.

Washington and River City will meet in the rubber match Thursday. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. Fans who attend can enjoy $1 beers and $1 sodas for the team's Thirsty Thursday promotion. For tickets, call 724-250-9555.
