\'Caps Win Third Straight With Two-hit Shutout

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps won another nail-biter on Friday night, pitching a combined two-hit shutout and riding Chris Sedon's solo home run to a 1-0 victory over the Lake County Captains at Classic Park.
West Michigan (3-5, 29-48) picked up their third consecutive victory after opening the half with five straight losses, suddenly finding themselves in a position to sweep the three-game series against Lake County (4-4, 48-29), who posted the best record in the Midwest League during the first half of the season.
The Whitecaps pitching staff has posted a stellar 1.92 ERA in their last 13 games despite a starting rotation that has been decimated by promotions, demotions and injury. Lefty Jared Wesson was tabbed to fill the rotation spot vacated by the demoted Ramon Lebron, and responded by leading a quartet of West Michigan hurlers in a two-hit shutout on Friday.
Wesson struck out six over 3.1 innings before reaching his pitch count, holding the Captains to two hits and walking two. After Lake County registered back-to-back singles with one out in the second, the 24-year-old out of Mississippi State punched out the next two batters to end the threat. Those turned out to be the only hits of the night for the Captains, who did not advance a runner into scoring position the rest of the way.
Miguel Mejia (1-0) relieved Wesson in the fourth and proceeded to retired all 11 batters he faced, earning the win with 3.2 perfect innings. Matt Little shrugged off a two-out walk on his way to throwing a scoreless eighth inning, and Kenny Faulk (4) worked around a two-out error in the bottom of the ninth to lock down the save.
The only run of the night scored in the top of the third, when Sedon launched a leadoff homer for the second game in a row. Using the same power that led to a school-record 22 home runs at the University of Pittsburgh in 2009, the 22-year-old second baseman took an 0-2 pitch and drove it the other way, clearing the right field fence for a 1-0 lead.
That doomed Brett Brach (1-4) to the loss despite a solid outing. Brach only gave up three hits in five innings, but the homer by Sedon was enough to propel the Whitecaps to victory.
