Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (July 2, 2010) - The Bees and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were locked in a 1-1 stalemate on Friday night until a critical seventh inning error paved the way for a late flurry of Burlington runs in a 6-1 Bees win at Community Field.
The win gave the Bees their first four-game winning streak of 2010. It is the team's longest winning streak since a six-game run last August, and it comes in part thanks to Wisconsin's Michael Marseco. The shortstop committed a fielding error with two outs in the seventh that allowed the Bees to take their first lead of the game. With runners on second and third, the miscue came with Gerard Hall batting and two outs in the inning. Hall hit a routine ground ball right at Marseco, who allowed it to kick off the webbing of his glove before he could send a throw to first that would have ended the inning. Instead, Jose Bonilla came home from third to give the Bees a 2-1 advantage.
The mistake chased Wisconsin starter Del Howell (L, 1-3) from the game after six and two-thirds innings of quality baseball. The University of Alabama product allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out three, but was charged with four runs after reliever Caleb Thielbar ceded a two-run triple to the first hitter he faced, J.D. Alfaro.
Joey Lewis drew a walk to lead off the eighth, and Rene Oriental provided a measure of insurance with one mighty stroke, his fifth home run of the year to push the lead to five.
Though he did not figure in the decision, starter Sugar Ray Marimon provided his second quality start in four outings since coming to Iowa. In six innings, the Colombian righty allowed only one run on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Sam Runion (W, 1-1) pitched a pair of scoreless innings, and Scott Kelley pitched in with a scoreless ninth.
Offensively, seven of the Bees' nine batters registered hits, including Fernando Cruz. The third baseman chipped in with a pair of singles to register his tenth multi-hit game of the season.
The Bees go for five in a row on Saturday night at Community Field. Get your holiday weekend in full swing with a spectacular post-game fireworks show thanks to Catfish Bend Casino, and cheer on the Bees as they close out a six-game homestand with one more against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
