
Great Lakes wins over Dragons

Dayton, Ohio - The Great Lakes Loons collected 21 hits including four home runs as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 13-3 on Friday night before a crowd of 8,595 at Fifth Third Field.
J.T. Wise and Blake Smith led the attack for Great Lakes. Both players hit home runs and each collected four hits in the game. Smith drove in six runs while Wise added three RBI. Angelo Songco had three hits including a home run for Great Lakes. Jaime Ortiz also had three hits including a homer and he scored three times.
The Dragons trailed by only one run at the end of the fifth inning, 4-3, before Great Lakes scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a commanding 9-3 lead. They added three more in the eighth and one in the ninth.
The Dragons had just four hits in the game. Henry Rodriguez hit a first inning two-run home run, his seventh of the season. Andrew Means, in his first game back in the lineup after suffering a broken finger on June 9th, delivered a fifth inning, two-out RBI single to pull Dayton to within a run at the time at 4-3.
Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Johnson (4-5) suffered the loss. He worked five innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs with no walks and two strikeouts. Relievers Mike Konstanty and Junior Martinez each surrendered three runs in the one and one-third innings of work. Jason Braun also pitched an inning and a third, giving up one run.
The Loons established season highs for a Dragons opponent in runs and hits in a single game. Their starting pitcher, Josh Wall, struck out 11 to match a season high for a Dragons opponent. Wall (4-4) worked seven innings to earn the win.
The Dragons (1-7) and the Loons (5-2) wrap up the series at Fifth Third Field on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Justin Walker (2-8, 5.08) will start for Dayton against Brett Wallach (4-0, 4.24). The Dragons begin a six-game road trip Sunday night at 7:00 at West Michigan. The next home game is Saturday, July 10 against Great Lakes.
