South Bend Comeback Falls Short

July 2, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks fought back and closed a seven-run deficit to one against the Lansing Lugnuts Friday night. It wasn't enough, however, as the Lugnuts added on to their lead late and defeated South Bend 11-9 in front of 4,109 fans at Coveleski Stadium.

Seemingly out of the game, South Bend scored six runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to climb within one. Bobby Borchering and Matt Davidson each picked up RBIs with the bases loaded before first baseman Ramon Castillo came to the plate. Castillo crushed a grand slam to left field, making the score 9-8. Castillo's hitting streak now stands at nine, the same number of games that he's played with South Bend.

Up 9-8, Lansing added two insurance tallies in the ninth against Chris Odegaard (ND). Chris Hopkins singled with one out, stole second, and scored on a single by Ryan Goins. Goins later scored on a fielder's choice by Justin Jackson to increase the Lansing lead to 11-8. South Bend scored a run in the ninth on a RBI single by Tyson Van Winkle before closer Steve Turnbull (SV, 18) shut the door by getting pinch-hitter Andrew Fie to ground in to a fielder's choice with the tying run at first base.

Up 2-1 after scoring two in the first inning off Ryan Shopshire (WP, 5-6) on RBIs from Davidson and Castillo, South Bend surrendered the lead in the third. Starter Brad Gemberling (LP, 2-5) walked Kenny Wilson and Ryan Goins to lead off the inning and set the table. Kevin Nolan, Yan Gomes, Kevin Ahrens, and Eric Eiland all picked up RBIs to put Lansing up 6-2.

Gemberling allowed three more runs in the fourth thanks in large part to an error he committed. With one out, Gemberling fielded a routine tapper and bounced the throw to first, allowing Wilson to reach safely. Goins singled before Nolan, Gomes, and Ryan Schimpf increased the lead to 9-2 with run scoring hits.

Brian Budrow (ND) relieved Gemberling and made the South Bend rally possible by throwing 2.2 scoreless innings. He left with a runner on third with one out in the seventh, but Odegaard (ND) got out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout.

The Silver Hawks conclude the six-game home stand and three-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) Saturday night at 7:30 PM with Fourth of July Fireworks to follow once again. RHP Diogenes Rosario (4-2, 2.28 ERA) starts for South Bend while Lansing counters with RHP Matt Fields (1-3, 3.98 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
