Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Fort Wayne bullpen came up big, delivering 4.2 scoreless innings in a 6-4 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods, Friday at Bowling Green Ballpark. Jeudy Valdez tacked on a key insurance run with a ninth-inning home run.
Bowling Green jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs in the first thanks to Tyler Bortnick's RBI infield single and Ryan Wiegand's two-out RBI double.
It didn't last long as the TinCaps scored twice in the top of the second. Daniel Meeley and Dean Anna came up with RBI singles to knot the game at 2-2.
In the top of the third, Danny Payne yanked a one-out triple into the right-field corner and scored on an error to make it 3-2.
Bowling Green tied it in the bottom of the third as Robi Estrada drew a one-out walk, stole second and later scored on an error.
Edinson Rincon led off the top of the fourth with a home run; a sacrifice fly by Danny Payne later in the frame pushed the TinCaps' lead to 5-3.
The Hot Rods chased LHP Pedro Hernandez in the fifth inning when Bortnick lined an RBI single up the middle, cutting the lead to 5-4. RHP Jon Berger short-circuited the rally by retiring the next two hitters. RHP Jeremy McBryde worked a perfect sixth inning and RHP Robert Poutier fired two shutout frames.
In the top of the ninth, Valdez smashed a solo homer to make it 6-4 and RHP Nick Schumacher closed it out to notch a save.
Berger (1-0) was the winning pitcher; Bowling Green RHP Wilking Rodriguez (4-7) lost his fourth straight start. The save was Schumacher's 17th.
Fort Wayne upped its record to 5-3 in the second half, 41-37 overall. The Hot Rods fell to 4-4, 35- 42 for the year.
