Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds beat the Vermont Lake Monsters, 9-8 Friday evening at Ripken Stadium. It was the second consecutive extra inning game between the two clubs.
Vermont scored right away to begin the game. Aberdeen starter Trent Howard walked the first two Lake Monsters he saw and they came around to score on a Xavier Macklin RBI single. Howard then balked home Chad Lewis to make it 3-0 before Aberdeen had even come to the plate.
The IronBirds got going in the bottom of the third. Dudley Leonora hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a Glynn Davis infield single. While Austin Knight was batting, Leonora stole home after Davis took off for second. Knight eventually walked, and then Mychal Givens hit a two-RBI double that tied things up at three all. All three runs the IronBirds scored in the inning came with two outs.
Vermont seized the lead in the top of the fourth. Diomedes Lopez led off with a single and came home on an Aaron Shipman RBI single, and it was 4-3 Lake Monsters after four innings of play.
Aberdeen put another three-spot on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Davis hit his first home run of the season to tie the game. Givens then singled, and scored on Joe Velleggia's RBI single. Velleggia would come home when the next batter, Wynston Sawyer, hit an RBI double to deep left center field and the IronBirds led 6-4 after five innings.
Vermont struck back in the top of the sixth. Jacob Tanis led off with a single, and Lopez then homered. Aaron Shipman singled and was batted home when Michael Fabiaschi hit an RBI single which made it 7-6 Lake Monsters.
Vermont got a run in the top of the seventh to make it 8-6, but Aberdeen sent the game to extras with single runs in the eighth and ninth.
In the bottom of the tenth, Davis walked, advanced all the way to third on a Knight ground out. Givens was intentionally walked, and then Velleggia hit a ground ball to Fabiaschi at second, but the throw was off line, allowing the Davis to score the game winning run.
Orlando Alfonso got the win, improving to 1-1. Taking the loss for the Lake Monsters was Jeiler Castillo, who falls to 0-1.
The same two teams will meet tomorrow night at Centennial Field. Aberdeen will start Matt Hobgood (0-0, HNP), a former first round pick for the Orioles. The Lake Monsters will counter with Seth Frankoff (2-0, 3.80). First pitch will take place at 6:05 p.m.
