Ottawa 67's News Release
Smiths Falls Monday, June 28th, 2012 - The Town of Smiths Falls and the Ottawa 67's Hockey Club are pleased to announce that the 67's will be playing a pre-season game at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre in September.
The game, which is slated for Friday, Sept. 7th, will see the Major Junior 67's take to the NHL sized ice surface of the newly constructed arena, which opened in October 2010, as the "home" team versus the Gatineau Olympiques.
Warmup will take place at 7 p.m., followed by the official faceoff and recognition of a local Community Hockey Builder at 7:30 p.m. Dan Mooney, the 67's regular announcer, will be announcing the game. Team mascots, Riley Raccoon and The Killer Puck, will also be in attendance. After the game is over, the 67's will take part in an autograph session.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to play in one of the Ottawa Valley's most storied hockey towns," said Jeff Hunt, the 67's owner and Governor. "The community is growing and bustling with an influx of new and returning families, and we're looking forward to meeting many of them on Sept. 7th."
Founded in 1967, the Ottawa 67's are considered one of Canada's most successful Major Junior hockey franchises, on the ice and in the stands. They've appeared in five Memorial Cup tournaments, winning twice, and have averaged more than 7,000 fans per home game since the team was purchased by Hunt in 1998. This year, while the Ottawa Civic Centre undergoes renovations as part of a broader redevelopment of Lansdowne Park, the 67's will play home games at Scotiabank Place, only 35 minutes from Smiths Falls.
For the Sept. 7th game, the Smiths Falls Junior A Bears will be supplying the national anthem singer. Likewise, off-ice officials will be provided by the Smiths Falls Girls Hockey Association (SFGHA) to assist with monitoring the concourse and corridors. The event will also provide an opportunity for the SFGHA to showcase girls' hockey through an exhibition game prior to the 67's matchup with the Olympiques and five-minute stop time showcase games between each period on Sept. 7th.
"Our staff are excited and look forward to working with the Ottawa 67's as we approach game night," said Rick St. Dennis, Director of Community Services for the Town of Smiths Falls. "The 67's are an outstanding organization and their rivalry with the Gatineau Olympiques is historic."
"Even more outstanding," St. Dennis continued, "is the Town's relationship with the Smiths Falls Junior A Bears and Smiths Falls Girls Hockey Association who, without hesitation, have jumped "Ëon board' to support and ensure the success of this event."
St. Dennis went on to say that the Town of Smiths Falls expects the pre-season matchup between the 67's and the Olympiques to be "another event involving joint partners that will enhance our chances of being awarded a Women's World Hockey Championship pre-competition camp and exhibition hockey game in March 2013."
The cost of tickets for the Sept. 7th game at the Memorial Community Centre will be $10 plus HST for Adults (13 years of age and older) and $5 for children aged five to 12. Children aged four and under will be admitted free. Ticket sales will commence in August at the Memorial Community Centre and online through the 67's website, www.Ottawa67s.com.
