Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack looked to get back to winning ways at the Bayshore on a Sunday afternoon against the Barrie Colts. Barrie lead the season series 2-1 coming into the game, but the teams had yet to meet in Owen Sound. The Attack took the first game 10-0, but Barrie won the next two. The Colts came into the game missing Matej Pekar to the World Juniors and had also been bitten by the injury bug, leading to 7 scratched players and only 9 forwards dressed. Attack captain Aidan Dudas and Attack Head Coach missed the game as they are currently overseas with Hockey Canada. Mack Guzda started for Owen Sound and Jet Greaves started for the Colts.

Guzda looked like he might have had to come out of the game a minute in after awkwardly deflecting a puck. He looked uncomfortable in the net but after a quick checkup with Andy Brown, he returned to the crease and stopped 13 of 14 shots in the period. The only one that made it past the Nashville native was after an Owen Sound turnover in the defensive zone. Ryan Suzuki capitalized on it and put the Colts ahead 1-0 at 6:55. Thankfully for the Bears, the line of Popov, Kirwin and Pearson was flying today. Pearson had a glorious opportunity in front of Greaves, but after he was denied Popov deflected it in off the netminder's back and into the net to the the game at one apiece. Two minutes later, the line connected again after Kirwin set up Popov who passed it to Pearson tape-to-tape for a one timer into an open net. Owen Sound held on to the one goal lead after twenty minutes with the shots on goal in their favour as well, 18-14.

Barrie jumped out to an early advantage in the 2nd period and didn't let up, scoring three quick goals in less than five minutes to hold a 4-2 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the frame. Oliver Smith recorded his first career point on Sredl's 2nd of the year, Jason Willms added his 15th of the year and Brandt Clarke scored his first career OHL goal to put the Attack in a 4-2 hole. The two goal deficit wouldn't last however, as Daylon Groulx got the monkey off his back with his 9th of the season to make it 4-3 as the teams headed to the third and final period. Shots on goal after forty minutes were 35-26 for Owen Sound.

Owen Sound needed a goal in the 3rd period and they put up the shots on Jet Greaves to earn it. The Attack put twenty pucks on net in the third, but were unable to beat the Barrie goalie. Guzda was pulled with a minute to go, but with the Attack killing a penalty they weren't able to generate the pressure needed and would fall to the Colts 4-3. Shots on goal were 55-32 for the Attack.

The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player was Kaleb Pearson. The Owen Sound Bug Juice North Stars Three Stars were Luke Bignell, Sergey Popov and Jet Greaves.

The Owen Sound Attack are back in action next Friday as they travel to Sarnia to take on the Sting. The Bears return to the Bayshore on Saturday night to meet the Guelph Storm. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available online and at the MacVicar & McComb Sutton Realty Attack Box Office.
