Windsor Spitfires News Release

The Spitfires travelled to Flint for a matchup with the Firebirds, this was the 2nd meeting of the season, with Windsor taking the first game 7-5.

In the first period, the Spitfires struck first, just ten minutes into the game. Corcoran shot and the puck deflected off a Flint players stick and went five-hole to put the Spits up 1-0. But the lead wasn't held for long. Two minutes later, the Firebirds scored on the powerplay to tie the game 1-1. However, the Spitfires rallied, and only 3 minutes after conceding, they scored a goal of their own. Stevenson shot and it hit a Flint player and then off the shin pad of Purboo into the net, making it 2-1. Shots were in favour of the Spitfires 16-15 after one period.

In the second frame, the Spitfires extended their lead to 3-1 when Mcdonald dangled the Flint defender and roofed it short side with four minutes left in the period. The Spitfires were outshot 34-23 after two periods.

In the third period, Flint struck quickly and made it a close 3-2 game. Nevertheless, the Spitfires scored 5 minutes later to put the game out of reach. Johnston got his 2nd of the campaign, and Angle and Afanasyev assisted it. With eight seconds left in the game, Afanasyev buried an empty-net goal to make the Spitfires lead and ultimately win 5-2.

The Spitfires' next game is home at the WFCU Centre on December 31st at 2:05 pm versus the Flint Firebirds.
