16 Former Grizzlies On NHL Rosters

West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies announced today that 16 of their former players are on NHL opening week rosters representing 13 teams.

The Grizzlies are proud to be the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's New York Islanders and their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport.

Ironically, three of the 16 players are members of the New York Islanders in Mark Streit, Richard Park and Jon Sim who open their season at New Jersey on Friday.

Derek Armstrong played at the E-Center just this past weekend when his Los Angeles Kings hosted San Jose on Sunday.

Goaltender Mike Smith and Freddy Sjostrom opened their seasons against each other this past weekend in Europe for Tampa Bay and New York respectively. Meanwhile Jeff Taffe and the Pittsburgh Penguins were overseas playing against Ottawa.

Richard Park: New York Islanders: With Utah during the 1999-2000 season.

Jon Sim: New York Islanders: With Utah from 2000-2005.

Fredrik Sjostrom: New York Rangers: With Utah during the 2004-2005 season.

Mike Smith: Tampa Bay Lightning: With Utah from 2002-2004.

Mark Streit: New York Islanders: With Utah during the 1999-2000 season.

Jeff Taffe: Pittsburgh Penguins (Placed on waivers yesterday): With Utah during the 2004-2005 season.

Ray Whitney: Carolina Hurricanes: With Utah during the 1996-1997 season.

The Grizzlies open the 2008-2009 season Saturday, October 18 at Idaho. The home opening weekend for Utah is Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25 versus Alaska at the E-Center.

The Utah Grizzlies, of the ECHL, celebrate their 15th anniversary season in 2008-2009. Owned and operated by the Elmore Sports Group, the Grizzlies enter their second season and sixth overall as an affiliate of the New York Islanders. South Jordan resident and former Islander Kevin Colley enters his first season as the Grizzlies Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations after serving as Jason Christie's Assistant Coach in 2007-2008 as the team advanced to the National Conference Finals. The Grizzlies play all home games at the E-Center of West Valley City, which hosted hockey during the 2002 Winter Olympics.
