Jackals Open Pre-Season
October 9, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY- Goaltending and special teams were of essence on Thursday evening at First Arena. The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, opened their pre-season against the Reading Royals. It was the first hockey game since last season's disappointing playoff loss to the Royals in game number six of the first round.
The heated rivalry continued just two seconds into the contest. Jackals forward Chase Tippin and Royals forward Jason McCrimmon dropped the gloves to the spectators approval. After the heavyweight tilt, the Jackals would pepper Royals goaltender Micheal Duzas. The Jackals wouldn't be able to find an answer to the Duzas puzzle until the 16:17 mark when Benoit Doucet would slam home a power play goal. Brett Pilkington and Steve Yetman would assist.. Again Duzas would remain strong turning aside 14 shots in the first period. The first period fist-a-cuffs would continue, this time with Kaleb Betts and Royals forward Kyle Harvey. Blow for blow the hay makers were delivered.
The second period would be more of the same. The hitting continued and Duzas made superb saves, until he was replaced at the 9:15 mark by Danny Taylor. With the shots 24-7 after the second period the score would be notched at ones. The second period loan goal came at the 11:49 mark, Shawn Snider from Tyler Doig and Patrick Wellar. A beautiful tick tack to play on the power play that beat McVicar clean.
Tied heading into the third, the two teams again would have a grudge match. Back and fourth the game featured big plays and big saves. At the 13:06 mark the Royals would take the lead. An odd man rush from the Jackals offensive zone that saw Mark O'Leary take a pass from Mike Lombardi who then stuffed it underneath the pads of Rob McVicar. With the pressure on in the remaining minutes, the Jackals once again would be shut down by Royals goaltender Danny Taylor.
The Jackals finished the evening out shooting the Royals 30-14 but lost by a final score of 2-1. Up next the Trenton Devils visit First Arena Friday the 10th, and Saturday the 11th. Both nights the puck drops at 7:35. Get your tickets now by calling 734-7825.
