
71 ECHL Players On NHL Opening-Day Rosters

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL has 71 players on National Hockey
League opening-day rosters, surpassing the record 69 players a year ago and
marking the sixth consecutive season that there have been more than 50
former ECHL players on opening-day rosters.
The total does not include Scott Gomez, who played in the ECHL for the
first time during the NHL lockout in 2004-05.
The Premier 'AA' Hockey League, the ECHL has former players on 29 of the
30 teams and has affiliations with 26 of the 30 teams in the NHL, marking
the 12th consecutive season that the league has had affiliations with at
least 20 teams in the NHL.

Bissonnette became the Paul
Bissonnette became the 356th player to play in the NHL when
he made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins in their 4-3 overtime
win against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday in Stockholm, Sweden.
There have been 100 former ECHL players who have played their first NHL
game in the last four seasons including 26 in 2007-08. Six played in both
the ECHL and the NHL last season with goaltenders Chris
Beckford-Tseu (Alaska and St. Louis), Dan
LaCosta (Elmira and Columbus), Jonathan
Quick (Reading and Los Angeles) and Danny
Taylor (Reading and Los Angeles) and left wings Adam
Berti (Pensacola and Chicago) and Joe
Jensen (Wheeling and Carolina).
There are 21 coaches with an ECHL background working behind the benches of
teams in the NHL including Washington Capitals head coach Bruce
Boudreau, New York Islanders head coach Scott
Gordon and Carolina Hurricanes head coach Peter Laviolette. It is the
fourth consecutive season that there have been 11 or more coaches with an
ECHL background working in the NHL.
The ECHL is represented for the eighth consecutive year on the National
Hockey League championship team in 2008 by Aaron
Downey of the Detroit Red Wings.
There are 18 former ECHL officials scheduled to work as part of the NHL
officiating team in 2008-09 with referees David

Hebert, Marc Joannette, Mike Leggo, Wes McCauley, Dean Morton, Dan
O'Rourke, Brian Pochmara, Kevin Pollock, Kyle Rehman, Chris Rooney, Justin
St. Pierre and Ian Walsh and linesmen Steve Barton, Brian Mach, Tim
Nowak and Jay Sharrers. Barton, Joannette, Leggo, McCauley, Nowak, Pollock,
Rooney and Sharrers all worked the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
