 Biloxi Shuckers

Shuckers Drop Opener at Mississippi

September 1, 2016 - Southern League (SL1)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release

The Biloxi Shuckers' playoff hopes took a hit on Thursday night, as the Milwaukee Brewers' Double-A affiliate fell to the Mississippi Braves, 5-1, at Trustmark Park. The loss dropped the Shuckers to 1.5 games behind the Braves in the Wild Card standings. Mississippi starter Patrick Weigel earned his first Double-A win and kept the Shuckers out of the hit column until the seventh inning in game one.

Biloxi starter Luis Ortiz (2-2) worked out of trouble in the first after allowing the first two batters to reach, but could not find the magic in the second, as Mississippi (37-28, 71-63) plated four runs to grab an early lead over Biloxi (31-35, 70-65).

Connor Lien drew a walk to leadoff the frame, and Willians Astudillo singled to center to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Johan Camargo got the Braves on the board first with a run-scoring single to center to bring home Lien and move Astudillo over to third. Camargo moved up to second on the throw home from Brett Phillips.

Patrick Weigel struck out for the first out of the inning, but rehabbing Atlanta Braves' outfielder Mallex Smith followed with a two-run single to center to make it a 3-0 contest.

With Ozzie Albies at the plate, Smith was caught stealing to bring Ortiz one out away from limiting the damage, but the 19-year-old second baseman lifted his sixth home run of the year over the wall in right to complete the four-run inning and put the Shuckers in a 4-0 hole after two innings.

Ortiz lasted just two innings for his shortest outing as a member of the Shuckers. The 20-year-old allowed four runs on six hits, a walk and three strikeouts. The right-hander needed 57 pitches to work through two innings, with 33 going for strikes.

Tristan Archer tossed the next three innings and did not allow a hit until Dustin Peterson homered with two outs in the fifth to extend the Braves' lead to 5-0.

The Kingsport, Tenn. native allowed the one run on two hits, but struck out five without issuing a walk in his three innings. On the season, Archer has 79 strikeouts in 79.1 innings pitched, with only eight walks.

Biloxi had trouble getting anything going against Weigel on the night, as the right-hander took a no-hitter, and faced the minimum, into the seventh inning.

The bid was broken up on Phillips' (1x3, R, 3B, BB) sixth triple of the season with one out, extending his hitting streak to five games. The hustling outfielder scored on the next pitch to Clint Coulter (0x4) to end the shutout attempt and bring Biloxi within four.

That tally would be the only blip on Weigel's line, as the 22-year-old surrendered the run on two hits, two walks and four strikeouts in his first Double-A victory.

Biloxi attempted a rally in the ninth with Johnny Davis (0x0, HBP) being hit by a pitch with one out and Tyrone Taylor (1x4) driving a single to right, but Caleb Dirks (SV, 2) got a fly out by Phillips and a ground out by Coulter to end the game.

The Shuckers will look to tie the series in game two of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Friday night. It has yet to be determined who will take the mound for Biloxi, but LHP Sean Newcomb (7-7, 4.06) will make the start for the Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:40 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app.
