Young's Four Hits Not Enough, as Biscuits Beat Smokies, 3-2
September 1, 2016 - Southern League (SL1)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
Trying to become the second Smokie in as many years to win the Southern League batting title, DH *Chesny Young *went 4-for-4, but Tennessee's ninth-inning rally fell short, as the Montgomery Biscuits came away with a 3-2 win on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
The loss drops the Smokies to 29-36 in the season's second half and 57-78 overall. The victory keeps the Biscuits in first place in the Southern League North Division and improves their mark in the second leg to 39-27 and 73-63 in total.
Down 3-0 heading to the final frame, the Smokies mustered a rally. Young (4-4, R) started the inning with a bunt single to third and RF *Kelly Dugan *(1-4, R, 2B, 2 SO) followed with a one-out double to put men at second and third. 1B *David Freitas *(2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, SO) pulled Tennessee within a run, as the veteran launched a two-bagger of his own to left. Both runners scored to make it a one-run deficit.
That was as close as the Smokies would get, though. RHP *Jaye Chapman *(1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, SO) recorded a strike out and then a fly out to end the game and seal the win for the Biscuits. The save marked the right-hander's 19th of the season.
Montgomery grabbed the advantage early with single runs in the third, fourth and seventh. The Biscuits opened the scoring, as LF *Cade Gotta *(1-4, R) singled and stole second before coming home on a single by SS *Willy Adames *(2-4, RBI, SO).
In the fourth, 2B *Juniel Querecuto *(3-3, R, 2B) slapped a one-out double. CF *Braxton Lee *(2-3, R, 3B, RBI) then ripped a two-out RBI single to stretch Montgomery's lead to 2-0.
Lee played a big factor again in the seventh, starting the inning with a triple to right. The very next batter - LF *Granden Goetzman *(1-4, RBI) - proceeded to bring him in with a run-scoring knock to make it a 3-0 Biscuits' lead.
LHP *Chris Kirsch *(7.0 IP, 5 H, 10 SO) led the way for Montgomery, tossing seven shutout frames to earn his seventh win of the season. RHP *Zach Hedges *(7.0 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 SO) tossed a quality start for the Smokies, but yielded three runs and 10 hits, suffering his third loss at the Double-A level.
Young (4-4, R) tied a season-high with four hits in a losing effort for the Smokies. As a result, the 23-year-old raised his batting average to an impressive .304 (144-474). After Chattanooga OF *Zack Granite*'s 2-for-5 night (.302 average) in the Lookouts' game against Jackson, Young now leads the race for the Southern League batting crown by two points.
The Smokies continue their final series of the 2016 regular season tomorrow night against the Biscuits. RHP *Jen-Ho Tseng *(6-7, 3.90 ERA) is expected to toe the slab for Tennessee, while RHP *Hunter Wood *(5-2, 3.40 ERA) is projected to grab the ball for Montgomery.
