Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla.- The Jacksonville Suns (30-35, 60-75) defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (35-30, 76-59) by a 4-1 score in the fifth and final game of the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Wednesday night.
The victory ended a seven-game losing streak for the Suns, and finished the road portion of the 2016 schedule for Jacksonville.
Suns starter Patrick Johnson (7-7) earned the win, going six innings on the mound where he allowed just one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Wahoos starter Nick Travieso (4-7) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Suns reliever Tayron Guerrero worked a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts to get his fourth save with the Suns this year.
All of Jacksonville's scoring came in the top of the third. Austin Dean provided the first runs on a two-run double to give Jacksonville a 2-0 lead, and he took third base on the throw. Kenny Wilson brought him home on an RBI groundout to second base, then an RBI single by Chris Curley capped the inning that put the Suns in front 4-0. Pensacola's lone run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when Brandon Dixon hit a solo home run off Johnson.
Tyler Higgins provided two scoreless innings of relief for the Suns in the seventh and eighth innings before Guerrero worked a perfect ninth to preserve the 4-1 win.
Miami Marlins infielder and tonight's Suns first baseman Derek Dietrich was 0-for-3 and was hit by a pitch and drew a walk in his fifth game of his major league rehab assignment with Jacksonville.
The Suns open their series with Mobile at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Gates open at 6 p.m. for Red Shirt Friday, when fans who wear red to support the military can save $1 per ticket at the box office or donate the $1 to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The red jerseys the Suns have worn for Friday home games this season will be available in a silent auction, with proceeds benefiting Jacksonville USO. Following the game is the season's final NAPA Family Fireworks. A Fan Appreciation Picnic package is available at www.jaxsuns.com. The game is presented by Gator Country 99.9 WGNE.
