Biloxi Shuckers News Release

BILOXI, MS. - The Biloxi Shuckers claimed their second rubber match of the season with a 2-0 whitewash of the Jackson Generals on Wednesday night at MGM Park. The win capped off an 8-2 homestand for the Shuckers as they wrapped up their home schedule for the 2016 regular season with a 41-28 record. Biloxi also capped off its best month ever with an 18-11 record. The Shuckers finished the 10-game homestand with an 8-2 record against the Southern League's first place teams.

Biloxi was eliminated from the divisional race in the second half with the Mississippi Braves taking out the Chattanooga Lookouts earlier in the day. The Milwaukee Brewers' Double-A affiliate can still reach the postseason as a wild card, should the Pensacola Blue Wahoos win the second half and the Shuckers have a better overall record than the Braves, who are a half game better than Biloxi.

Wednesday was Biloxi's (31-34, 70-64) turn to strike first, as the home team treated its fans to an early 2-0 lead, thanks to a two-run laser onto the berm in right off the bat of Brett Phillips (1x3, HR, 2 RBI, R).

Tyrone Taylor (2x3, R, BB) worked a full count to start out the Shuckers' offense before lifting a single to shallow left-center. Phillips then sent an 0-2 delivery from Bryan Evans over the wall in right for his 16th home run of the season, giving Biloxi the two-run advantage.

Angel Ventura (2-4) made the lead stick in his ninth start of the season for Biloxi. The right-hander held the Generals off the scoreboard for six innings while allowing just one hit against the team with the best batting average in the league (.267) coming into Wednesday. The 23-year-old recorded his third quality start of the season, and added a walk and six strikeouts to his line.

Preston Gainey carried the moment on the mound with two strikeouts in the seventh, and Jacob Barnes worked around a one-out error for a scoreless eighth in his final rehab appearance.

Stephen Kohlscheen (SV, 23) tossed a perfect ninth to record his 23rd save in 25 chances.

Bryan Evans (0-1) took the loss for Jackson (37-27, 83-51) with two runs allowed on five hits, a walk and eight strikeouts in five innings.

Biloxi heads north to take on Mississippi for the final five-game series of the season up at Trustmark Park starting Thursday night. RHP Luis Ortiz (2-1, 0.42) takes the mound for the Shuckers against RHP Patrick Weigel (0-2, 3.65) for the Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:40 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app.
