Jackson Generals News Release

Biloxi, Miss.- The Jackson Generals dropped the rubber match and series finale of a five-game series to the Biloxi Shuckers 2-0 on Wednesday night at MGM Park in Biloxi, Mississippi. Jackson's offense recorded just one hit, a single from Tyler Marlette, in the loss while drawing three walks.

After Jackson (37-27, 83-51) was held scoreless in the top of the first, Biloxi (31-34, 70-64) took an early lead on swing of the bat in the bottom of the first. Tyrone Taylor started the inning with a single to center. Brett Phillips then stepped in and hit a two-run homer to right to give the Shuckers a 2-0 lead.

Neither team knew it at the time, but that was really the only offense both teams would see all night. With one out in the top of the third, Tyler Marlette singled to center, but was later forced out at second on a fielder's choice to end the inning. Marlette's single was the Generals' only hit of the night.

In the top of the fifth, Jackson had its only real threat of the night. With one out, Adam Law drew a walk. Law stole second a batter later and advanced to third on a throwing error by Jacob Nottingham. However, Marlette was called out on strikes before Patrick Brady grounded out to end the inning and strand Law on third.

Biloxi meanwhile had its only other threat in the fourth. Nottingham led off the inning with a single to right and quickly stole second. Dustin DeMuth was then hit by a pitch to put men on first and second with nobody out. Gabriel Noriega put down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Unfortunately for the Shuckers, Tom Belza struck out and Angel Ortega grounded out to end the threat.

Part of the reason why both team's offenses were so quiet was both had excellent pitching as well. Bryan Evans (0-1, 4.76) took the loss for Jackson despite an excellent outing. The righty gave up two runs (both earned) on five hits over five innings while walking one and striking out eight. Angel Ventura (2-4, 4.33) got the win for the Shuckers after six scoreless innings in which he gave up one hit, two walks, and struck out six. Biloxi used three relievers out of the bullpen who combined to toss three hitless innings while walking one and striking out three.

With the loss, the Generals finished the seasons series with the Shuckers at 5-5. Jackson won the series in Tennessee 3-2, but due to Wednesday's loss they dropped the series in Mississippi 2-3.

With the loss, the Generals also finished the road portion of their 2016 regular season with an incredible 42-29 record. No other team in the Southern League currently has more than 36 wins on the road this season. In fact, no other team in the league will be able to finished the 2016 season with more than 40 road wins as Montgomery has the second best road record (36-33) and they finish the season at home.
