Hickory Crawdads News Release

Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads and the Charleston RiverDogs faced on in a classic pitchers' duel Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of their 3-game series. A 1-1 tie in the third inning lasted all the way until the 10th, when the 'Dogs got a hit-and-run, RBI double to break the stalemate and give the 'Dads a 2-1 defeat at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The RiverDogs struck first with an unearned run in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead. Ricardo Ferreira led off the game with a single, took second on a passed ball by Crawdads catcher Chuck Moorman, advanced to third on a bunt hit from Hoy Jun Park, and finally scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Mandy Alvarez to put the road team ahead.

Hickory answered with an unearned tally of their own in the third, as Ti'Quan Forbes led off with a hit-by-pitch before he advanced to second on passed ball by Charleston catcher Luis Torrens, moved to third on a single from Luis Silva, and ultimately scored on a wild pitch from Christian Morris to tie the game at 1-1.

Both offenses dried up through the remainder of regulation, as the 'Dogs were held without another hit until the eighth while the 'Dads accumulated only four hits the rest of the way. Hickory starting pitcher Joe Palumbo kept his team in the game with six dominant innings on the mound, with the southpaw striking out a career-best eight batters while allowing only one unearned run on two hits and two walks. Reliever Jacob Shortslef picked up where Palumbo left off by fanning five of the six outs he recorded over two scoreless frames.

The RiverDogs finally got a rally started in the top of the 10th however, when Gosuke Katoh led off the frame with a walk from Crawdads reliever Tyler Ferguson. The RiverDogs then executed a perfect hit-and-run as Katoh took off for second base as Cesar Diaz hit a hard ground ball through the vacated left side of the infield. With the outfield playing deep to prevent an extra-base hit, Katoh was able to score all the way from first to break the tie and give Charleston the 2-1 lead they would win by.

Ferguson (0-1) took the loss for the 'Dads after allowing one run on two hits, two walks, and one strikeout over two innings pitched. 'Dogs reliever Hobie Harris (2-4) earned the win after tossing three scoreless frames on one hit and three strikeouts, while teammate Andrew Schwaab (19) recorded the save for setting the Crawdads down in order in the bottom of the 10th.

Forbes led the 'Dads bats with a 1-3 game including a double, a hit-by-pitch and a run scored. Carlos Arroyo, Ricky Valencia, Yeyson Yrizarri, and Silva all finished 1-4 at the plate.

The Crawdads (32-31/70-63) have an off day on Monday before heading to Asheville for their final road trip of the regular season on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
