April 10, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- 4,022 fans packed their way into WesBanco Arena on Friday night, and they were rewarded with a phenomenal performance by the Wheeling Nailers. Wheeling peppered the Elmira Jackals with 48 shots, erasing a 1-0 deficit for a 3-1 victory. David Makowski, Zack Torquato, and Chaz Johnson had the goals, while Franky Palazzese made 18 saves, giving the Nailers an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot on Saturday with a win in regulation or overtime.
After a scoreless first period, Elmira broke the deadlock at the 10:03 mark of the middle frame. Jacob MacDonald took a right circle shot, which got deflected to the left side of the crease, where Mike Seidel tapped in the power play goal. The lead lasted for a short time, as the Nailers answered with the equalizer 2:44 later. Mike Slowikowski let a shot go from the middle of the blueline, which bounced around in the crease. David Makowski found the loose treasure, burying it with his backhand. With 3:16 left in the stanza, Wheeling pulled ahead. Evan Wardley started the play with a self pass in his own zone, before delivering a cross-ice feed through center ice for Riley Brace. Brace poked the puck forward for Adam Krause, who cruised around the back of the cage with a wraparound pass in the crease. Zack Torquato was the recipient of the feed, as he slammed in a shot, darting in on the left side.
At the 4:54 mark of the third period, the Nailers added an insurance goal for the 3-1 victory. Chaz Johnson broke in on the left side of the offensive zone, roofing a shot over Travis Fullerton's blocker. Cody Wydo and Shane Bakker assisted on Johnson's 17th tally of the season.
Franky Palazzese made 18 saves on 19 shots in the win for Wheeling, including a stellar stop on a Ryan Rashid one-timer in the third. Brandon Whitney made one save in a quick relief appearance. Sam Marotta took the loss for Elmira, despite turning away 30 of 32 shots, before leaving with an injury late in the second period. Travis Fullerton picked up 15 saves on 16 shots in relief, as all four netminders saw action.
The Nailers and Jackals will meet again on Saturday at 7:05 in Elmira, as Wheeling finishes the regular season with two tilts on the road.
