Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

BELOIT, Wis. - Cedar Rapids and Beloit combined for 39 total runs on 37 total hits as the Kernels set season-highs in runs (23), hits (19), and extra-base hits (11) in a 23-16 win over the Snappers at Pohlman Field on Sunday afternoon. Every non-pitcher for both Cedar Rapids and Beloit scored a run and collected a hit in the game. Every Kernels position player had knocked in at least one run by the third inning. Individually, Adam Brett Walker collected seven runs batted in and two home runs for the second time this season on his way to a four-hit, four-run scored day. Byron Buxton tallied four hits, four runs batted in, and four runs scored as he finished a home run away from the cycle. The duo of Walker and Buxton combined alone to either drive in or score 19 of the Kernels 23 runs.

Both teams sent at least nine batters to the plate in an individual inning twice. The Kernels (24-10) started the offensive outburst in the first inning as nine men batted, and Cedar Rapids scored six runs to take a 6-0 lead. The first five hitters reached before an out was recorded. Dalton Hicks walked with the bases loaded for the game's first tally, and Adam Brett Walker drove in a pair with a RBI double. Travis Harrison was retired, but made the score 4-0 on an RBI groundout. Tyler Grimes capped off the inning with two-run home run to straight-away center field, and the Kernels were up 6-0.

Beloit (19-15) pushed across a pair of runs in the second inning on back to back RBI singles by Ryan Matthews and Brett Vertigan, cutting the Kernels lead to 6-2.

The Kernels sent 11 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored eight runs on five hits to blow the game open 14-2. Walker connected for his second double of the afternoon and came home on Candido Pimentel's RBI single. J.D. Williams drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the next run. It was the first of three walks for Williams on the day. Buxton's two-RBI double scored both Grimes and Pimentel, and Niko Goodrum followed with a RBI single that scored Williams and put Cedar Rapids up 11-2. Jorge Polanco's RBI sacrifice fly then scored Buxton. Later in the inning, Walker hit the first of his two home runs. It was a two-run bomb to left that put the Kernels ahead 14-2.

Beloit's John Wooten singled home the first of his five runs batted in with a base hit in the bottom of the third that scored Renato Nunez, making the score 14-3.

The Kernels extended the lead to 17-3 in the fourth inning when Buxton drove in both Grimes and Williams with a RBI triple.

In the sixth inning the Kernels jumped ahead 22-3 as six more runs came home. Goodrum doubled to score Williams, and Polanco's sacrifice fly plated Buxton. Two batters later, Walker nailed a three-run home run to left that brought home Goodrum and Hicks to put the Kernels up by 19 runs. It was Walker's second long-ball and seventh run batted in, the second time he has recorded that line this season.

Beloit did not go down quietly as they scored 13 runs over the final four innings. Beloit brought 11 batters to the plate while seven straight Snappers reached in the sixth inning, including four straight run-scoring hits. Christopher Bostick and Daniel Robertson singled home runs while both Nunez and Matt Olson each plated a pair with RBI doubles, making the score 22-9. Nunez's tape-measure blast to left in the eighth inning made the score 22-10.

The Kernels reached their final run total of 23 with a Williams RBI sacrifice fly in the ninth that brought home Harrison.

The first two outs were quickly recorded in the bottom of the ninth, but then the Snappers made things a bit interesting by bringing a total of nine men to the plate in the inning. The Snappers scored six times, making the score 23-16. Robertson tripled home a run, and John Wooten hit a grand slam for a total of five runs batted in on the afternoon. The game mercifully ended with a fly out to center.

The pitching lines, unfortunately for most hurlers, still counted in the game and were not pretty for most as all but one of the 39 combined runs were earned. Jose Berrios pitched well for the Kernels, but still allowed three runs on six hits over four innings. Berrios struck out six and walked three. David Hurlbut allowed six runs and six hits in just over an inning. Alex Muren (1-0) looked the best for the Kernels, allowing a single run in over two innings of work. He was credited with his first win after joining the team last Monday. Josh Burris recorded the first two batters in the ninth inning but ended up allowing six runs in his inning of work.

Seth Streich (3-2) started for the Snappers and allowed 11 runs (10 earned) over two innings. Kris Hall went two innings, allowing six runs. Chris Lamb allowed five runs over two innings. Stuart Pudenz was the only man on the mound not to allow a run in the game as he went two frames. Position player Sam Roberts pitched the ninth inning for Beloit and allowed one run.

The Kernels and Snappers meet in the rubber game of the series on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. The Kernels are 3-0 in series-deciding games and 11-0 in the final game of a series this year.
