Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Parker Markel allowed one run in seven innings, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (28-19, 66-51) fell to the South Bend Silver Hawks (24-23, 59-58) 2-1 in the finale of the three-game series at Bowling Green Ballpark on Friday night. In the rubber match, Juniel Querecuto drove in the lone Hot Rods run, following a Jake Hager triple in the first inning. South Bend broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth when Eric Groff scored on a wild throw error by Tyler Goeddel.
Markel lasted seven innings in a game for the third time this season, each time tying a career high. On Friday night, the righty allowed a lone first inning run and struck out five. Since his last loss on June 28, Markel is 6-0 with a 2.43 ERA in eight starts and has hurled four straight quality starts. The Hot Rods are 6-2 in that stretch.
Despite Markel's brilliance, the Hot Rods offense, which entered Friday night with a Midwest League-leading .270 team batting average, could not find a clutch hit. Bowling Green brought runners into scoring position in each of the first six frames and again in the eighth. However, the team finished 0-15 in the category and stranded 11.
Both Jeff Malm and Kes Carter recorded multi-hit games for the Hot Rods. Querecuto extended his hitting streak to seven games, but Alejandro Segovia saw his fall at 12 games. Outhitting the Silver Hawks 7-5, the Hot Rods fell for just the ninth time in 63 games when outhitting their opponent.
The Hot Rods begin a six-game, seven-day road trip on Saturday night at 6:00 PM CDT at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, MI. Getting the start for the Hot Rods in the first of a three-game set against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Future Tigers) is RHP Jake Floethe (10-3, 3.14). The Whitecaps are scheduled to counter with RHP Marcelo Carreno (6-8, 3.67). Tune in to the game on the flagship station for the Hot Rods Radio Network, WBGN-AM 1340 "The Ticket," and online at 1340wbgn.com. The Forever Communications Pregame Show with Hank Fuerst begins at 5:40 PM CDT.
