Clinton LumberKings News Release
Peoria, IL - Another back and forth affair went the way of the LumberKings on Monday night in Peoria. Clinton scored five times in the final three innings and the LumberKings dispatched the Chiefs, 8-6, at O'Brien Field.
Facing a 5-3 deficit, Clinton took the lead in the seventh inning with three runs. Designated hitter Chris Taylor was hit by Justin Berg to start the frame and promptly stole second base. After Dan Paolini walked, Kevin Rivers doubled to score Taylor and cut the lead to 5-4. With Paolini at third, Berg uncorked a wild pitch allowing the tying run to cross.
With two outs and Rivers at third, Guillermo Pimentel hit a deep drive to left center that Pin-Chieh Chen dropped.
Rivers walked home and the LumberKings led 6-5.
Jeff Antigua came on to pitch the ninth for the Peoria and promptly allowed back-to-back homers. Paolini hit his ninth of the year down the left field line and Rivers followed with his fourth hit of the night, his first homer for Clinton. Rivers finished 4 for 5 with the home run, two doubles, two runs and three RBIs. In the series, Rivers is 9 for 13 with five doubles, five runs and five RBIs.
The insurance runs proved important when Peoria staged a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Stephen Shackleford retired Chen to start the ninth but then hit Chadd Krist and allowed consecutive singles to Dustin Geiger and Bijan Rademacher to load the bases. David Colvin was summoned from the bullpen and struck out Tim Saunders for the second out. Wes Darvill walked to cut the lead to 8-6 but Colvin buckled down and got Oliver Zapata to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the rally.
Coupled with the win and Burlington's loss to Quad Cities, the LumberKings have a four game lead in the second half standing in the Western Division. After coming up short in their bid for a four-game sweep against Cedar Rapids, Clinton has another chance on Tuesday in Peoria. Left-hander Jordan Shipers (4-4, 3.73) gets the nod for the LumberKings against right-hander Starling Peralta (3-7, 3.38) for the Chiefs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
